Post a few characters you thought were terrible but turned out great.
In my opinion, I thought suzaku from Code Geass was just a big douche who betrayed his country and became a absolute hypocrite.
Suzaku: Zero, you fight for justice, but your methods are just wrong...
Me: >_> You hypocrite..
But then later in season two, he turned into a winner, with his turn of events and personality.
After episode 3, her spitefulness and rude nature became more likeable.
Taiga for me as well, at first she seemed like a bitch, but eventually it became clear she was just protecting herself. A few others, but Taiga's the one that stands out.
The opposite I liked her at first then it went sour.

Which reminds me, Mikuru I hated how subservient and whiny she was at first, but once the possibility of her just playing Kyon for information, faking the personality came in, I enjoyed her much more.

I suspect this list will have a lot of tsundere in it...
First one to come to mind is Ami Kawashima from Toradora, started out as being an irritating/obnoxious bitch- and then she became a likeable/obnoxious bitch. I guess there's a big difference between being mean for the sake of being mean, and being mean because it's funny.
Not exactly anime, but Shana (the blonde chick) from Cosplay Fetish Academy. Her rude and wild personality became funny and charming when in her path when there was affection behind it. I played her path last because i liked her least, and it turned out hers was the only one I actually liked (all the other girls were irritatingly subservient as girlfriends).

Himeko...used to annoy the shit out of me (The English one)...then she just started 'growing on' me.
I think her MAHO's did it. I don't care what anyone says- The English Dub of Pani-Poni is Hysterical!!!! I especially love Rei, Becky, the Bunny & The Cat who thinks he's God.
Ami from Toradora and Sakura from Naruto I can relate to.
Sheryl Nome from Macross F. She seemed like such a bitch in the first episode, but I totally fell in love with her right after that. Ranka Lee was the opposite. Alright at first, then just stupid, selfish and annoying.
I only came around Suzaku after the Black Knights's betrayal. Before that he was a total douche.
