The Fate of Identicons

  1. I have noticed the "Identicons" (random avatars) the main page uses in place of Gravatars for users with no avatar seem not to cope all that well on a site of this scale, and worse yet the code is not being updated. Since sometimes the results are poor or buggy, and they consume resources on the server, I am considering removing them.

This might encourage people to use proper Gravatars, and as I will try to provide a tasteful triangle logo as default (I think a low key grey coloured one would work best) should not result in any aesthetic problems. Besides which a lot of the random avatars look awful.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? For, or against, or as to alternatives?

  2. changing the color of the default avatars on the forum would be nice too. there were a couple times where i said "when did artefact get so stupid" and then realise that it wasnt you

  3. I would suggest taking the avatars completely off the server and jsut let people learn to use gravatars instead. It might even help with the server cache and maybe speed it up a bit?

good idea but are you forgetting about friend anon?

  5. Anon or not some of them need to learn how to properly get an avatar. I frankly find it trippy when i see the colorful default avatars. I have seen many anons that have a gravatar but stay anon.

most of us are identified by our gavatars but for true anonymity one would remove their avatar beside what would it be replaced with? also if you havt read hes getting rid of the identicons so no more fruity colors and replacing it with the a grey A instead of of the usual orange. and i for one vote on this unless i can find or create some awesome design. that i like.

Keep the colorblind in mind, just making it gray wont let them tell your avatar apart from anonymous.
Considering the site is bound to have a far greater male audience your numbers of colorblind users will be greater then that of the avarage site.

For the rest I really don't care what the icon is of the ones without a gravatar, but I'd go for something else then just a color switch.. like making it 4 triangles or something.

Mmh just discovered I'm colorblind unless someone is having fun tricking people on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorblind
Can't see the number in the Tritanopia image... very odd, never knew :)

  8. Personally, I don't think anonymous users should really be using avatars as it rather defeats the purpose of being anon, and removes the "ego-less" aspect of anonymous posting. Not that I would do anything about it.

I initially liked to have the default the same as the one I use here, as I prefer to stay low key and instead make the site itself the object of people's attentions, hence having the same avatar as anon. However, this really looks too colourful in long comment sections, so a more restrained avatar for the default seems preferable. A light grey triangle in the site palette might fit the bill...

  9. I don't really care about keeping my avatar distinct, I'm just concerned about the appearance of a hundred orange triangles on a page...

geerie and the rest were chatting at IRC... they said Artefact is not real.. maybe he's just an orange triangle in front of the desk typing...

I would suggest that you should not make the anonymous gravatar be same as yours, I remember posters by avatar, not by name... so whenever I see that triangle by just a glimpse, I know it's you... A sky-blue triangle would be nice for an anon...

    I'd advocate removing anon avatars.
They have no attachment to the site, therefore they shouldn't have a problem with a need to be identified by a colored box either.

Dark Mirage uses chibi-style anime avatars with his Gravatar system.
It's nice, because all the annon or Gravatarless posters have a uniform style of picture, similar to what the site has now.
Is it possible we could do something like that, and if so, does Gravatar host those already as some sort of scheme, or is that something you would have to plug into the site again, Artefact?

Also, I wouldn't worry too much CC, the Wiki page says LCD monitors or ones with high glare may inhibit people from seeing the images properly.

  12. I am going to fix up that Sankaku logo in grey right now.

I checked the DM system - looks custom, but fairly simple. Dealing with all the avatars ans setting it up looks like a hassle (not that I know which system it is).

I'm in favour of anonymous posting, but unless you have a logon system, there is another side to it - (some) persistent anon will just post as "anon" with a junk email address, so you may as well make them welcome and allow the anon posting, rather than try to force them to create a persona. I always used to prefer anonymous interaction so I understand this well.

Well I checked on both my Laptops screen and my SyncMaster 206bw that for a TFT has the colors sorted pretty damn well. So I think I'm just colorblind :P

Don't care much though, unless they start drawing anime in ways I can't see.
