Homeric Question

  1. Well, after weeks of sporadic reading between family, work and other shit I finally finished to read both Iliad & Odyssey; and now, the first question to spring to my mind is: really, the same guy wrote both books? If he did, why they are so different? I mean, for example Iliad is so lineal is one heroic dead after another for pages, and pages, while the Odyssey feels like a more complex work. More time is spent presenting character motivations and traits, most of the history is told in a flashback, etc.

So, how can it be possible for the same guy to write such different poems? How much time did he spend writing each one? People weren’t supposed to live really short spans in that era?

Thanks, I’m waiting for your answers, you douchebags ^_^

  3. You are in the General forum which literature would fit under. I only have read the Odyssey and that was about 7 years ago.

Humans have always been able to live into their 60's-100's no matter where medical technology was at. The average life expectancy in the past has been lower mainly due to high infant mortality as well as famine, drought, plagues, and obesity related diseases in later life.

  4. momokiller: yes if you want to see in that way the topic looks out of place here. But it happens I’m bored of lolicon, games and anime from time to time. And since most of people here are college students…

Fiona, what you said is very interesting. I was told that in the past, before the current medical technology it was almost impossible to past the 60 y/o "barrier". It made sense to me at the time, but I'm open to new information on that topic.

For me the logic was as follows: they were no dentist, so if you loose your teeth then you were unable to ate, so you had to die from starvation. Just to put an example.

  5. There is a friend of the family who knew an elderly man who would eat apples without the aid of teeth or dentures. My grandmother didn't have teeth or dentures either and she ate a normal diet such as spaghetti, porkchops, steak, liver, turkey, chicken, etc.

Many prominent Ancient Greeks like Socrates lived into old age.

  7. I might be wrong, but wasn't Homer blind ?
I remember him being a bard - or something like that - and it wouldn't be very weird if someone else wrote down what he went around singing, using different styles. maybe the general idea behind it was his, but well, who knows who wrote them down. how, and for who. or was he just trying to tell stories using a different style ?
speculate, speculate, but you'll never get the truth.

  18. My wife was seeing the last H.P movie in cable (the one with Helena Boham Carter) and it was really painful to see; I mean the “actors” aren’t acting (ie: playing a character) they are only posing in the most pandering way they can find.
