I know it took a while, and it isnt nearly as high quality as the first, but I'm and art student who just happens to have to take English 101, so here is the paper i asked about on the first page
The Logic NOT behind Pornography Bans
I believe that it is not our goals and objectives that make us the person we are, but the path we are willing to take to get there. There is currently a battle being fought, and it is many organizations of the developed world rallying against a minor part of Japans pornographic content. Like much of the developed world Japan has outlawed pornography of minors, however it currently does not have a ban on "Loli" porn which consists of drawn minors in the style of anime and Manga. I will explain the arguments of the many un-Japanese organizations who support a full ban on Loli porn, and also the defense given by the Japanese and other peoples who oppose the ban. I do not support the ban on the precepts of sheer logic, freedom of speech and expression (which is also in the Japanese constitution), and statistics.
It is easy to justify a ban on any actual child appearing in pornography, but when organizations like Equality Now (American Feminist Organization) say things like “It is simply bizarre that any kind of Manga can be published simply because no actual people appear in it." and even "It is absolutely incomprehensible that they are allowed to do this to children just because they don’t exist.", it makes me question their logic. This basically sums up my argument on logic; the fact is that all you need to make Loli porn is a guy with pencil and paper. There are never any children hurt in the making of this, and it would be impossible to stop production of it even with a ban.
Freedoms of speech and expression are two of the things this country was founded on, yet we constantly argue over how much those FREEDOMS should actually be allowed to the general public. The head of UNICEF has actually condemned Japan for not passing tougher anti-Loli laws and given quotes like “If it causes harm to children, freedom of expression should be restricted.” She is not the only one, UNICEF Japan(not officially part of UNICEF) also supports a ban, and its leader Agnes Chan(Former Chinese pin-up girl) have said things like “People who think of children’s nudity as a tool don’t need freedom of expression.” Many will agree with me that such a blatant display of wanting to suppress constitutional freedoms is wrong, but many still will agree to them because of their ideology.
Statistics are important to get your point across, but a big argument against this ban is that there is no proof that pornography depicting minors, actually makes people want to have sex with minors. Equality Now (American Feminist Organization) has been hounding Japanese officials for some time now for bans on the principle that such porn incites action of the real things. However when asked were the proof is they say things like "I think it is wrong to think that just because there is no data supporting a link that Manga does not influence sex crime. It is nonsense to suggest you need evidence to support a ban.”, “In other countries they have bans. Only in Japan can we not get a ban. A ban is so obviously right that there is no need at all to provide an explanation or data to the mangaka groups.”, “They are suffering from denial, they keep arguing that you can’t ban something with no evidence against it. We have to think of a counter to this.”, “But there is no evidence that child porn Manga increases child rape. Of course, there is no evidence that the Manga exerts a cathartic effect and reduces crime either." The first few quotes may seem bad, but the last one could actually be FALSE, as over the past 20 years many countries that have cracked down on the content or availability of adult material have actually seen increases in sex crimes, while Japan who has made it easier to obtain the adult material they deem legal has actually seen a sheer drop in sex crimes.
I personally don't mind if Japan creates porn about imaginary characters, it really doesn't affect me one way or the other. However, when organizations step out of line like this it infuriates me as an American that people would want to subjugate others on such an ill construed basis! It is one thing to say you want to "defend the children", but when you don't have the sense, the right, or the proof to support what you want to do, then you will only fail.
