  1. I've been looking over some of the email subscription options which could be added to the main site.

These should be quite easy to implement:

    1. Email alerts (with the excerpt) of new posts, possibly with custom options (like from a particular category).

    2. Email alerts of comment activity in a particular post.

Most of this functionality can of course be had with the numerous feeds, but I appreciate perhaps not everyone likes or uses them.

I'm just wondering if there is much call for these?

If there is, I will need to check them out with respect to mail volume, as with 10+ posts daily and 10,000 feed subscribers (I don't know many it is, but we get 15,000+ visits a day with no referrer, which is mostly either bookmarks or feeds), an unrealistic worst case could see 100,000 mails being sent out daily, so I can't guarantee it will be feasible.

I'm at a loss as to how most people track the comments - I use the full comments feed (although with a thousand a day this is becoming unmanageable), but there are also the post feeds and the simple business of refreshing the page later on. Any feedback here would be interesting.

  2. Idk... the email idea sounds great and very convenient, but sending out 100,000 daily just doesn't seem like a feasible option... and if the population of the Sankaku community continue to grow, it could easily reach larger numbers. Of course, it is not guaranteed that every person who visits the Sankaku site would want to make a subscription... One possible solution to this, I think, is to just send one email at the end of the day and include in it which articles have been posted that day (relative to you). Then, even with 10+ posts a day, you will only have to send ~10,000 emails. Of course, that would mean that it's not an instant update but...

I myself use the feeds, but then for some weird reason, they lag behind and I only see the feeds themselves like a few hours after the article is posted on the main site... so I gave it up and now have Sankaku homepage, forum, and channel open in three different tabs on firefox, open at all times. Whenever I want to check for updates, I just referesh.

  3. Oh, one thing I would love is that on the main site, if somebody responded/replied to your comment, there would be an email sent out... like right now, I have no idea if anybody replied to my comments or not.

I track the feeds for individual posts, and I'm satisfied with that. I'm certainly open to e-mail alerts as an option however. An even better option IMO would be alerts for comments in response to one of your own, but that might take some work to implement.

Odd that the feed lags for basilio though. I see updates immediately.

Hmmm... I think it may be the fact that I'm using the Feed Headlines gadget for the windows sidebar... I subscribed to this anime torrent site, and their feeds are lagging for me too.

    Any alternative suggestions?

Do you mean that even after it refreshes the feed the latest items aren't there? Not sure if you already know this (and not to insult your intelligence if you already do), but RSS clients refresh feeds on a schedule (like every hour) to get the latest updates. I don't use Windows, but I'm sure that you should be able to change the gadget's settings so that it updates more regularly.

Other than that, I can't really think of anything.

  7. For me, I use the RSS feeds for posts, though on one occasion I subscribed to comments there was about 100 or more, and getting tough to determine which was new.

I don't think I would use an email option, maybe except if I would be notified if someone replied to me.

Hmmmm... sadly, the gadget on the side-bar does not display any settings for changing the refresh time. I think I should just get another client for feeds then = ="...

  9. I use Feedreader, though admittedly only to monitor the Sankaku Complex feeds.

It seems there's not a huge amount of interest in this so I will prioritise accordingly (may still do it though).

Yes please, I love post tracking on joystiq and other sites and forum post update notifications are always welcomed.

Hell I'd even pay 5 a year for it!

Just make sure you give people a option, some don't like the email clutter..
