VACAVILLE, Calif. -- A Vacaville family and their entire community struggled with a tragedy Wednesday night after police said a two-year old girl was accidentally shot and killed by her eight-year-old brother.
Vacaville police continue to investigate the incident, trying to determine if a crime was committed.
Word of the deadly shooting has spread throughout the community as strangers stopping by to offer their condolences.
Wednesday night, the house was empty and the police vehicles were gone, but the tragic event will no doubt last a lifetime for this family.
"There was like an ambulance and they brought out the little girl on a stretcher,” said 17-year-old neighbor Olivia Koch.”They were doing CPR on her. She had blood on her face.”
It was inside a house on the 1000 block of Syracuse Circle where police say a two-year-old was shot and killed by her eight-year-old brother.
"It 's a tragic case of a sibling who picked up a firearm, thinking it was a toy, pointed it as his sister and discharged one round from the firearm, striking her in the head," said Vacaville Police Sgt. Charlie Spruill.
The little girl was rushed to Vaca Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities said when the shot was fired, around 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, both parents were home, but that they were downstairs while the children played upstairs.
During their investigation, officers removed four rifles and two handguns from the house as they try to identify the weapon used.
Police said there was a gun safe in the house, but wouldn’t confirm if the weapons were locked inside as required by California law.
"If you have firearms in your home, it is absolutely essential that you ensure -- if you have any locking devices or safe -- that it is properly secured and properly locked,” said Sgt. Spruill. “It does no good to have a lock on a case or lock on a firearm or a gun safe if you don't have it secured from your children."
Officers interviewed the parents and the boy and are investigating whether any laws were indeed broken. However, authorities said that right now they are giving the family time to grieve.
Authorities said the father is an army reservist. Police said no matter a parent's experience with guns, it's important to talk about gun safety with children.
"You need to teach your children the difference between a live firearm and a toy firearm or a fake firearm,” said Sgt. Spruill. “We'd also like parents to teach their kids to consider any firearm, a real or replica, always consider it loaded."
Authorities said potential charges against the parents could range from neglect to child endangerment.
