If I'm not mistaking sankakucomplex is running wordpress?
(Or did someone like putting a lot of effort into making it look like it.. down to the sourcecode ? ;)).

Anyways, would be great if you could install the following two plugins to improve upon the comment system:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ajax-comment-posting/
Ajax comments, so placing a comment doesn't interrupt video playback and who knows it might save bandwidth, though I doubt it as loading a javascript for everyone with only a few commenting probably doesn't pay off.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ajax-comment-preview/
Comment preview, cause I'm a nub and always press send before looking over my post 20 times, like I should. There is a 'live as you type' one to.. but I don't know how reliable it is.

Would be appreciated if you took those into consideration.

  2. for me and my experience, I would only suggest one thing for the comments section...

using the [URL] code or equivalent. It might save space and it makes the link more readable...

Is it about security reasons, that's why you don't use it? like people clicking a link to a virus site?

  3. Turn off the timer for post edit. Humans are hypocritical creatures with minds easily changing every day.

  4. The site does indeed use WP - I'm sure Arty will chime in sooner or later about the plugins and ideas (which just confuse me).

About the post edit timer, that's exactly the reason why the timer is in there in the first place, Terrawind. I believe extending the timer was considered at some point, however...

Plain old html worked for me and I think it's stated somewhere tat bulletin tags worked.
Epic site <- err lol.. why isn't the [code.] tag preventing that from becoming a link..

Actually, part of the reason why I asked for a preview plugin is that I do occasionally screw up simple html :), and I don't know which tags are and aren't supported as I could imagine <script> is one you wouldn't want to function for security reasons, and you probably don't want to prevent people from posting 2000 pixel wide images, screwing up the layout. (though I'm sure the wordpress people thought of placing the comments in divs with a overflow: scroll or hidden)

worked! thanks! I was going to do that long time ago, but I was afraid it would fail.

  7. I'm aware of these plugins. Unfortunately, there are a mountain of issues with all of them. With the amount of comments we're now dealing with (approaching 1,000 a day), I'm not making any changes lightly, and adopting plugins can have far reaching implications.

I am sceptical about a comment preview - most people obviously don't read what they post so it looks to be of limited use.

The change I would be most interested in making is adding editable comments, but even this is difficult.

What I actually have planned is integrating the comments and forum, so posts become threads in the forum and the comments on the main site take on some of their characteristics, but implementing this is involved and may take time.

    Just use normal hyperlinks.

Haha, you tried to do the same as me.. something is wrong with those code tags on these boards :)

  9. I think it's doing some custom post-processing on the links - thankfully nobody uses the code tags here...

  10. Well since this isn't a programming forum I'm not surprised at that, in any case.

  11. Why when I go to post a comment, it doesn't remember my info? Before my info would automatically appear and now it doesn't.

    So true.

Also, check to make sure there's not a problem with your cookies, man. That's usually what happens when sites forget my info. Cookies expire or screw up.

I'm experiencing the same problem. Thought it was a Firefox remembering the field entries for me.. and as I have been fiddling around with new addons lately I thought one of them was too blame.

If other people are experiencing the same it might be worth looking into.

considering it's as simple as adding htmlspecialchars() to whatever is changing the code tags it's strange it's missing in the first place.

The forum software in general seems to be a bit, well how to describe it without making it sound worse then actually is...
    primitive?

    @Artefact
As you're looking to integrate the forums and comments (something I've never been too fond off.. but that's just personal) you might want to look into replacing the forum software with phpbb. It seems to get posts impressive google rankings if you want to haul in traffic and there seems to be quite a bit of info on how integrate it with wordpress.

  14. oh, so not only me is experiencing that "not remembering" thing...

Minimalist is the term you were looking for.

phpBB doesn't have any currently working or reliable full integration - I researched all this extensively. The only one that does is vB, which I think to be inappropriate for a number of reasons.

The simplicity is a conscious choice, I'm actually leaning towards a GameFAQs style simplicity rather than vB clutter. Also, this software is rather good for SEO (haven't turned on URL rewrites yet though).

I just finished revamping the thumbnail engine so I may take a look at the forum later - please do tell me if you have any suggestions.

Regarding the cookie issue, a malconfiguration on the server has been corrected - you may have received bad cookies. Try clearing them.

  16. Ign.com's system works pretty well with the topic creating a thread in the forum and the comments both being posts and are readable directly below the article(I'm sure other websites do this as well but Ign implements this pretty well).

The forums' simplicity is a virtue, if you ask me.

I'm curious—have you evaluated something like Disqus? I imagine you have, but maybe you don't like the idea of giving up control of the comments?

Edit: Also noticed that whenever I click the new stories in the upper right hand corner of the Forums or Channel this happens. It just opens the site within the frame. Not sure if this is a known issue.

  18. I've noticed the forum eats up backticks. Tried to post AA a while back and I only got a part of it. Hope it's not a sanitation problem but just thought i'd throw that out there.

And I think the forum is fine. But it kinda bothers me when quoting someone it also quotes the Nico video or image. It adds noise, imo.

  20. I have found a slight annoyance with the newer comment system its not automatically feeling out...oh gawd...I have been here to long hehe...er... FILLING out the comment name/website/email.

Is this a bug or the way the new system works?
Perhaps I need to flush my cookies...
