You guys know any good artists that do commissions?
Posted 2 months ago # -
I follow a throng of artists on DeviantArt of whom many do commissions. I don't remember by heart which ones do, but I'm sure I could round up a few links. I have no idea about pricing though. Perhaps they're way expensive. Artists always seem to have ten times the monthly bills normal people do.

Half of that is for the coffee.

Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, to be specific.

For artists that do it for a living or aspire to do it for a living you've gotta think, how many they can realistically do in a week or month and how much they need to pay for bills and life. Plus it's not like you're buying just a print (which are usually $10-$20 at a con) you're having a piece custom made for you, you're gonna have to pay a decent amount for that. Just as an example, Slugbox's commissions start at $200. Granted, he is a pretty popular artist, but you're generally looking at like $80+ for any self respecting artist. Depending on how long the piece takes, it could easily end up that the artist is working for minimum wage, or even less sometimes, depending on how the artist works.

What do you charge?

Like 20-30. Just for some side cash, and to challenge myself a bit.

For $500 I will buy art classes then draw you a thing afterwards.

I think $30-60 is entirely realistic as well though. I haven't looked through commissioning artists for a while, but I think $30-60 isn't uncommon.

I don't know shit about it really.
I follow one artist which I found a long time back, and enjoy work of.
She's charging up to 55$ for the most expensive pieces/work.Posted 2 months ago # -

Started drawing again after all this time. Didn't know where to start so I just went back to the basics and did contour drawing. I actually managed to do all the exercises all the way without stopping, aside from when I got bothered by my brother.
Though I still feel like I did them all wrong since it was hard to keep completely concentrated. At least they ended up looking coolish.

On top of that you're almost expected to shit out fanart or art tropes at a diarrheal pace. I think actual talent/quality of the art comes last, and I'm not even saying that from a butthurt perspective, just a realistic one. Work ethic trumps talent almost every time. Even then, unless you are lucky, it's still hard to make a living out of it because most people do not want to pay for your time/time it took to get to that level of talent. So yes it is a mystery to me as well.

Honestly, from my experience, it tends to be people just want their OC drawn. Whether it's been things I've been commissioned to do or stuff I've seen of other artists, that just seems to be the trend. But yeah, it's mostly impossible to make a living of commissions like that. I do it for just some cash to spend on stupid shit, especially if I'm broke.

It is a mystery to me why PEOPLE WHO LOVE TO MAKE ART
CHOOSE TO MAKE ART AS A PROFESSION exactly for the reasons Pacpon mentioned.
Actually it's not a mystery to me. Those people are lazy motherfuckers who couldn't resist the entirely detached-from-reality idea of breezing through school by only drawing shit and then draw more shit after finishing school and being paid for it. EZ life.
If you love to make art, and you would hate to economify (yes I made up that word; start using it) your art, then you get a normal job and keep art as a hobby.

Well that's just because they love doing something and they want to keep doing what they love, isn't it? I mean, why draw comics? Why make music? Why make films? If you have to sell out a bit to make a living that's fine. You're still infinitely better off than someone that has to do something they don't like for a living.

Exactly what Nin said. Most people should keep art as a hobby, I do.

It always felt more like investigative work than artistic work, because it was so much info they provided that I had to dig through, and then by the end of it, it was too little money to be worth it. Not enjoyable at all.
I have a feeling this is why I hate tattoos. Everyone asked for tattoos but didn't want to pay for it, and every time it was either a shitty concept and/or overdone (imo).
