Comparing manga from different region

  1. I got nothing better to do so I decide to compare manga from region

    1. US - del rey

    2. Singapore - Chuang Yi

    3. Taiwan/Hong Kong - Tong Li

    4. Thailand - Vibulkij

    5. Original Japan - Kodansha

does localization of the translation destroy manga or does it help?
Anyone have other version please post it

Thai version sux they flip the image and sensor with nasty sound effect...
In term of localization Del Rey is abit too much...

  2. Interesting, I remember there being a comparison like that in the Chisame/Misora volume of Negipa.

Regarding the versions which are not Japanese, I preferam happy with the UK/US version as the best (Del Rey and Tanoshimi versions are exactly the same), the sound effects are translated and not altered and I really like the font they use. The translation notes and extras at the end (such as Akamatsu's notes and so on) which made it in make them special too.

  3. Pretty interesting, out of the two English ones there, i think i prefer the tone of the text in the Del Rey/Tanoshimi version, though one page isnt a big sample size id admit.

  5. Dude i've seen like the original Ranma 1/2 manga pages which had a kind of watercolor shading and hella more detail than the american scans of it and it blew my mind. I'm trying to find those scans but i'm having trouble

I didn't know localizations could mess with the original versions so much. also I never really had a problem with what del rey did with Negima but as an english speaker i have no idea what the original was like. At least how they talked sounded more natural than some of the other translation i've seen.

It interest that only then Chinese version actually translate the extra under the dust jacket while the rest just cut it out.

  7. I don't really care. I buy local because the price of the US ones are just too much, even more than the original Japanese tankoubans. And I remember reading a translated GS Mikami where it has a footnote telling the readers what Lolicon is. I lol'ed

  8. All I can see that difference is the dialogue bubble. Thx anyway for the information.

  11. It's a shame the US/UK versions weren't printed in colour, Akamatsu's artwork is gorgeous, especially in that sections.

I did find the Del Rey versions to not "bend" as much in the spine when compared with the Tanoshimi versions.

  12. ahhh man thats rubbish that the uk/us edition didnt have the colour print! i never knew it was supposed to be in color, such a shame.

also, ive often wondered why uk/us prints are in larger volumes than the original Japanese. i quite like the Japanese form factor.
