Simply put, this is a topic to discuss your favourite visual novel and reasons as to why that is. Eroge or not eroge, what is yours, and why would you recommend it? Would it be excellent character designs, a really good script, lovely female characters?

Japanese or non-japanese? Because I don't understand a lot of japanese so most games I played were translated.
Anyways, my recommendations would be, for eroges:
- Yume Miru Kusuri - A Drug that Makes You Dream. Officially published in english. Great CGs, especially if you're into loli. But what truly stands out is the story, that is somewhat of an emotional rollercoaster, and the characters that are as realistic and psychologically developed as they can get in an eroge. Probably my favourite altogether.
- CROSS+CHANNEL. In japanese. Same writer as the above. I'd say that the story is even better - unfortunately I certainly have missed a lot of it - but the CGs are sometimes deceiving. To play for the story rather than for the sex.
- Wind -a breath of heart-. Great fan translation by insani/NNL. Cute story that makes you quite emotionally implicated in the game, and indeed lovely female characters. Not all that great h-scenes though. But the story is so nice that it is largely worth playing.
On the side of non-eroges, I've played very few visual novels, but the only one that really marked me is Key's Planeterian. The fan translation by insani is simply awesome and if you usually enjoy sad post-apocalyptic s.-f. stories with a lot of emotional implication, this is for you. One bad point though, it's not a ''true'' visual novel taken that there aren't any choices to make. The maker refers to it as a ''kinetic novel''.

As light novels with lots of pix go Kyouran Kazoku nikki. I know it's for kids but it just freaking rules.

Apart from that, I agree. Also because it's the only true visual novel that I've played to nigh-completion so far.
I can also recommend any of Key Software's works, if you're not put off by the artstyle (upper lip sometimes being horizontally aligned with lower eyelids) and don't mind being reduced to tears by the end of some routes. Beautiful storytelling, amazing soundtracks, adorable characters.
Fate/stay night also seems made of win, though this is second-hand info as I have only seen screenshots and a third of the anime adaptation.

Tsukihime is at the top of my list, but its already up there.
My favorite non-ero visual novel would probably be Chaos;Head. For a non-ero, character design is alrite...but thats about it. I guess I like it because of how different it is from any other story ive read. Also, the descriptions of actions and feelings of torture were fun to read.
Utawarerumono and Tears to Tiara(Leaf) bcuz of good story, but mostly because it had fun gameplay.(Its not often that you see a commercial grade battle system in an eroge. While were at it, I didnt like the bttl sys from eternal fantasy, but it was well done)
Last one I'm not done with yet but; School Days
What do I like about it? Fully animated game. The entire game was like an anime with two for choices. Also, characters quite well developed. Did i mention the morbid bad endings? Those are EPIC!Posted 7 years ago # -
Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Incredibli good story with grat cast of cahracter, not eroge whatsoever)
Chaos;head (Good sstory altough it lacked ero or at least mroe routs)
Tsukihime (basically same reasons as everyone)
Uatawarerumono (Great story and fun battle system)
