  6. I'm gonna have to second Boris and Envy. Another band to look at if you're interested in something a lot more slow and brooding is Mono. I know a lot of people who swear by them as one of the best bands in the Post-Rock movement.

Yet another band that I'm fond of(also post-rock) is called ルルル(RuRuRu).

As far as (...) bands go, I still listen to Dir en grey and Maximum the Hormone sometimes. Back when I wasn't sick of J-pop/rock, some of my favorite bands included: X-Japan, Luna Sea, Crows, Kagerou, hide, Screw, and The Pillows.

i'm with ya. i dont look down to most of them, but some new attempts are always more preferable than just-another-pop-blend-compound.

what else you've got besides the two mentioned?

  8. The guy started the thread 3 months ago so I wonder if he's still lurking around here. Anyway, as for japanese music, I really only know of bands/singers that do anime music. But after I hear their anime music, I search out their other albums. I'm crazy for Nana Mizuki right now. Oh I have listened to non-anime music once. I found a best of j-pop cd at the library once. It introduced me to groups like Soul'd out. Ummm....I tend to like Gackt songs. Oh and the Oricon charts are a good place to check I guess.

Unfortunately, that's just about the extent of my knowledge for this thread, since I don't specifically seek out stuff from Japan. I like Anamanaguchi and Asobi Sekusu, but neither of those are actually Japanese. One other silly little math-rock band I found a while back is called Lite.

some of their stuff gets tiring to listen to after a while though.

I decided to throw another Boris video up, since they play several styles. this is stoner/psychadelic rock with a much slower tempo than the other song posted.

It should be noted that they do lots of drone metal too, but I won't suffer you all to listen to that.

Ah yes, that's what I did with Susumu Hirasawa(Paprika) and Ohtsuki Kenji(Zetsubou, N.H.K.). Okay well not really, I only kept the OP songs.

  10. i was constantly rubbing my eyes watching the PV. then i figured out its not me.

i find pop stuffs from japan more easier to accept than elsewhere's. i actually i can't bare western or chinese pop at all. i guess the reason is even though the japan ones are pop, when they blend with other elements they do put thought into it, rather than just mass producing shallow craps for profit. Authenticity is crucial in today's music and art realm. Japanese pop are "real fakes" (the worst way to put it) while western and chinese pop are "fake reals" (the only way to put it). An artist/musicial/band should always be true to him/herself/themselves.

I don't feel like I've heard enough of any country's pop to make an informed decision, but I think generally I feel the same as you. It seems to me that a lot of pop is just a corporation with a singer representing it(various no-names do the actual lyric writing, staging, publicity, etc). On the other hand, it's definitely possible to do pop music right. But like I said, I don't feel informed enough to say that one country or the other has a higher percentage of good pop.

  12. Here are two videos mostly unrelated to anything other than they are Japanese artists and I enjoy them.

Polysics do the best cover of My Sharona, period. It's awesome. These guys are so intense and wacky it's hard to not enjoy the music.

Also, I just accidentally a whole nostalgia. Is this bad?

  13. I know this is a bit date but, I'll post in case there are people who haven't seen this:

Onegai Senorita PV by Orange Range, a parody of Densha Otoko

Densha Otoko itself is a love dorama featuring an otaku falling in love with a pretty girl. This story was based on a "true" story based on posts on 2Chan.

For comparison, 1st episode of Densha Otoko:
