The Little Sancom-Webster Pocket Dictionary

  1. Seeing how the weather thread has severely derailed into a discussion of Murrican vs Brittanian spellings of words, as well as other linguistic interests, it seems Sancom has a healthy interest in the topic, so lets keep it going in here :D

Please discuss/ask/rant anything involving language, grammar, spelling, meaning and origin of words, idioms and all other grammar-nazi type topics :3

  2. It's actually levare. Be lifted up! Unless you're talking to a group of people, in which case it's levamini.

Or maybe it's a subjuctive? Leveris; may you be lifted up? Levetur; may it be lifted up?

Or are you talking to the force that does the levitating? Leva; lift it up!

The "v" is pronounced like a "w", btw.

  3. Kudi no, don't bully dear sweet Hermione. Besides wizardly spells and enchantments follow different grammar

Now back to Brittion lingo: Is it true that windshield wipers are wishy-washys? that sounds really far fetched, but you do call the television telly, so it could be. By the way, I love that word, telly, so moe

  5. For a group of people stereotypically known as stuffy and proper, you have some seriously silly way with words

Now switching to accents (for a bit) much as I love the British accents (both proper and cocky) my favorite English accent is the Scottish, gets me nippy every time

  7. having to suck some dick, the gentlemen in the homeless shelter surrounded me

the absence of a definite article in the gerund phrase in that sentence means that as a result of a dangling participle it's not totally clear how much dick i have to suck during the holidays

  8. sorry Kudeh, my heart is silly and sweet and it wants what it wants

the only exception is Sean Connery, that ape is so damn un-sexy that it kills the accent for me

see now you're just being inflammatory, trying to hurt me out of spite, not cool kude

I don't think any Mexican accents are that nice, tho. Out of all the Spanish accents/manners of speech, probably the Colombians have the nicest one.

  12. such is the curse of being Pantsu

in all seriousness, out of all the Spanish speaking nationalities that I've met, the Colombians have generally been the nicest ones, and their accent/speech manners are also the nicest, and don't sound as if they'd only completed second grade or were raised by an alcoholic goat.

Mexico has many accents, almost one per state, but roughly divided by region, the north (my area) is loud and rough, people often think we're pissed off or being confrontational, when we're probably just happy or just having a normal conversation. Central Mexico sounds goofy in the way the words are enunciated, can't really explain it but is unmistakable, you hear it and know they're from Mexico City or near it. Southern Mexico sounds lazy, almost as if they can't finish the words, and sounds nasal for some reason.

Spaniards rarely sound educated for some reason, the accent is fine but the way they speak the language makes me cringe.
