Do you remember..?

One thing I remember about tech in Germany is that all the kids were using ICQ to talk to eachother. ICQ never got big over here. MSN Messenger was the way to go for IM in Holland. So when I had an exchange with a German school back in secondary school, a lot of kids downloaded the other program to be able to meet & greet online before the exchange. Fun times.

I also had the biggest trouble ever writing an email home when I was in Germany. Using that QWERTZ keyboard was doable after some practice, but WHERE IS THE DAMN @ BUTTON?!

Oh ICQ.. this brings back memories. I sill have on my old HDs the ICQ-logs of my cringeworthy shit I've sent to my female classmate I had a crush on. And @ is like pikka said altgr+q on a german keyboard. Now it's too late anyway.

Thank goodness we're not using QWERTZ over here. We don't even use Dutch as input language.

But you guys have to type mutated vowels (umlaute), too, like in "coördinatie".

  3. Remember when a song took 10 minutes to download?

Remember when you watched to watch the trailer for a new game, and you watched 2-second sections of a 3 minute video, then had to wait for another 30 seconds for another 2 seconds of the video to download?

    Haha, that's awesome. Never delete.

You're right, but the US International layout allows that. For example, when I type ", it doesn't immediately appear. It waits for my next input. If it's a vowel, it turns into the vowel with an umlaut. If it is a letter that doesn't have a variant with an umlaut, it simply appears as quote marks. The same goes for some other buttons that allow me to make silly letters such as ç or ñ.

...By the way, how come you know that word? That's cool.

I remember when downloading an anime episode took days and I excitedly checked back several times a day to see if it had finished.

  6. I don't actually remember that as I had dial-up internet for only 3 or 4 months. After that my mom needed broadband for her work so I've been using broadband since 2000.

  7. Now I can download a 1080p film in 10 minutes.

ālsō, ī jūst rēālīsēd thāt mȳ kēȳbōārd lāȳōūt āllōws mē tō ēāsīlȳ ūsē ̄mā̄c̄rō̄n̄s.

    edit:

they apparently come out looking like shit if you use them with consonants and a non-monospace font tho

and sometime in between, downloading a movie or a small series required you to leave it downloading overnight, sometimes for several days XD

In case this might change heavily in the future, here's a letter to the future me and future readers of this thread.

    Hi,

In 2015, downloading a semi-obscure JAV sometimes required you to download a .rar in several parts from obnoxious download sites that only allow you to download one file every 3 hours unless you become a premium member. In the past, I have downloaded a JAV in five parts, starting a new download whenever the website would allow me to again, which in practice took the evening of one day and the afternoon of another to do. In the end, the video inside turned out to be a random, really bland JAV, completely different from the one I was looking for. The title of the .rar was wrong. Hopefully, downloading obscure JAVs has become much easier in your time.

    Best regards from 2015,
    Nin

I've complained about that many times. There are a lot of "JAV" sites out there whose modus operandi is to post links to premium file sharing sites that claim to be of a sought after film but are actually something else.

    I have a few PROTIPs:

    1. Look for screenshots. If you see a pic of the film's DVD cover but you don't see screenshots, it's fake.

    2. Look for the file name on the sharing site. If it's something completely random with no relation to the film's title, it's probably fake (but make sure that the film code isn't actually hidden away behind a bunch of Xs and Zs)

    3. Get an extension like this. Whenever you come across a site posting fake JAV, add it to your blocklist so it won't appear in google searches.

I'm going to take this advice very, very much to heart.
