Who dun'it?! The Sancom Crime Thread

  1. The disappearance of Ray Gricar. I wanna know if foul play was involved, or if he really vanished into thin air (highly doubt it)? The whole case surrounding the mystery. It's so creepy, but fascinating too.

  8. Is this Tara Calico?

On Sep 20, 1988, 19-year old Tara Calico proceeded to go on her daily 36-mile bike ride outside the community of Belen, New Mexico. Witnesses saw her being followed by a 50s model Ford Pickup truck on New Mexico Highway 47. She was never seen again, and her mother's bicycle which she was riding because her's had a flat tire was also never recovered. It hasn't been determined if the truck had anything to do with her disappearance.

A theory was believed for several years that Tara was the woman who was pictured in a Polaroid photo, that was found in Port St. Joe, Florida on Jun 15, 1989. The woman in the photo was seen bound and gagged along with an unidentified boy. The mother of nine-year old Michael Henley who disappeared in 1988 in the same area as Tara believed the boy to be her son. Henley's remains were found in New Mexico's Zuni mountains in 1990. It was believed that Henley had wandered off and died around the same time when he disappeared.

Several agencies examined the Polaroid photo and came to different conclusions. Scotland Yard said the photo might have been of Tara and Michael, the Los Alamos National Laboratory disagreed and the FBI was inconclusive. Polaroid officials said the photo had to have been taken after May 1989. A copy of a novel was seen in the photo, the author of the novel was Tara's favorite author. Two other photos were found in 1989 and 1990, one was found in Montecello, California which Tara's mother thought might have depicted her daughter. The other one, found in 1990 may have been a cruel joke. This theory has never been proven but it is unknown to this as to who is in the photos.

  9. Tara Calico is one of my favorite disappearances

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara_Calico

I believe she was killed and her bones are somewhere in the brush, and people have just missed it/gone overlooked. This makes the picture found not being Tara, but a totally different and unrelated case, which as a result has gone overlooked.

  10. According to Rene Rivera, the Sheriff of Valencia County, New Mexico, two teenage boys were following Tara while on her bike ride but accidentally hit and killed her. They could have disposed her body somewhere in the local area and had assistance from accomplices, possibly their own parents. This has not been confirmed and no names have been released. Rivera has said that he needs more evidence to prove that this theory is correct.

  13. What the hell happened to Johnny Gosch?

12-year old John "Johnny" Gosch has been missing since 1982. Undenieably one of the most controversal missing child cases still unresolved, because of the amount of conspiracy theories abound in this case and the powerful people implicated in them. AMW aired this case back in the early 90s.

What can confirmed as correct is that Gosch disappeared on the morning of Sep 5, 1982 in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was delivering newspapers when witnesses saw him talking to a man in a car. Eventually, his mother, Noreen got tired of the lack of proactive investigation by authorities (even though that wasn't rare at the time, since missing person cases only became well known shortly after John disappeared). Noreen wrote a book about the case and believed that her son was sold into a pedophile prostitution ring. Noreen also claimed that her son visited her apartment in 1997 with another man, and was given information as to John's situation. In 1999, a witness claimed that he had assisted in John's abduction and was the victim of this same sex ring, however, authorities determined that the man was in Omaha, Nebraska at the time of John's disappearance. In 2006, Noreen told the press that she had received photos that depicted what she determined to be John and other boys bound and gagged. A Florida law enforcement official claimed to have investigated the same photos in the 1970s.

But wait, things get more bizarre.

This mysterious supposed prostitution ring was said to be run by high-level officials in Omaha, Nebraska. Alleged victims claimed that children in foster care were sent to the eastern US to be abused at "bad parties". Two juries determined the allegations to be baseless. The case continues to be a hot topic as far as conspiracies go.

Noreen also believes that John's father was involved in her son's abduction. Noreen has also implicated the abductor of California girl Michele Garecht (her mother actually denies Noreen's claims) in this case. I also recall reading somewhere that Noreen refused to submit a sample of John's DNA (although that I may be wrong on).

There were two other boys who went missing in West Des Moines in the mid 80s. 13-year old newspaper carrier Eugene Martin vanished in 1984 and 13-year old Marc Allen disappeared in 1986.

As for the conspiracy theories, they range from former president George H.W. Bush being a homosexual pedophile, the involvement of this so called Illuminati Pedophile Ring and theories that missing children are turned into slaves at Area 51.

So here's my analysis of some of the facts and opinions that have been presented.

#1: Why would a high-level pedophile ring target children in suburban America? My high school Law teacher said it best when criminals should commit their crimes in urban centers, seeing as how they would be less likely to stand out and authorities have to contend with so many other crimes. Also if this ring originated out of Omaha, Nebraska, why would this ring have to abduct three boys all the way in a Des Moines suburb? Even the modus operendi of how some of the women and girls of Juarez, Mexico were abducted resulted them being lured into downtown businesses. It is so illogical.

#2: Is everything that Noreen Gosch has said reliable? Noreen has claimed that someone told her right before Eugene Martin disappeared that another boy would vanish. However, no one in law enforcement has taken her seriously and I don't believe anyone credible helped her in making her book. I don't think she's truly dishonest but someone who was frustrated at the actions of law enforcement (in general) at the time and wanted to link almost anything to her son's case. It is also illogical that if she was actually visited by her son that she would not have helped him in some way, living a life having to look over your shoulder is not something any truly-loving parent should want their child to go through.

#3: How many other missing children were victimized by this supposed ring? The most common case people try to link this to is Jacob Wetterling, even though that happened in Minnesota. I want to see a list from one of these conspiracy theorists as to how many missing children we should be looking at and if there aren't alternatives to the individual disappearances.

#4: If there was no prostitution ring, then what happened to Johnny, Eugene & Marc? We can all agree that the cases are somehow linked. Although the common similarities appear to be the work of a serial killer than some high-level prostitution ring. Perhaps because of the inactivity of Iowa authorities, and because of Noreen's conspiracy theories, no honest law enforcement work was done. How do we know that the supposed sighting of John talking to a man in the car was even legit?

I want to hear the opinions of anyone who may be interested in this case or have previously researched it. I'm not totally discrediting the theory of some sort of pedophile ring, it's just some of the claims brought forth either have to be taken with some skepticism or a grain of salt. And does anyone have any other theories? You can read intensive discussions on both credible law enforcement message boards and conspiracy theory boards, the amount of debate is quite astounding.

This is a very fascinating case. Though I have to agree that due to the incompetence of law enforcement and Noreen's dillusions and conspiracy theories growing because of that, proper investigation is difficult. I've heard a lot of stories surrounding this case. Along with the high profile sex slave factor, Some claim Johnny's father to have kidnapped/killed him to save his marriage with Noreen (which obviously eventually didn't work).

The only way I can believe a pedophile ring (or crime period) in suburban America is that Iowa and Nebraska are smack dab in middle America. Despite the possibility of standing out, Nonurban areas means low population/population density and wide space/isolation which means few witnesses and easier to do the crime and hide it. Plus this is before crime investigation was really modernizing so whoever took Johnny may have had the benefit of unsuspecting law enforcement. One thing to note is that Paul Bonacci claimed to assist Johnny's abduction in 1989. While Noreen believed him, Johnny's father was more skeptical. Paul Bonacci also claimed that Johnny along with other boys had been marked with a "Rocking X".

Some go so far as to claim Johny is alive as infamous columnist Jeff Gannon. As to Paul Bonacci's claims, I think he's lying to gain some fame. I also think the conspiracy theories involving Nebraska are partly the doing of John DeCamp, a fundamentalist and fundamentalists at times dabble in conspiracy theories. Regardless, this is one tough cookie of a case to solve.

  14. I do believe some kids and adults that disappear do end up being trafficked, and I honestly believe that pedophile/sex slave rings are a thing in high up circles of politics and business/rich peoples.

That being said, most cases are kids that were taken by some dude who molested/raped/killed them, and there's no mystery behind them. Same with the teens and adults, but with them they are also just as likely to have just ran away and/or killed themselves.

And yes, that case Khan posted could've prolly been solved long ago had it been properly investigated, and not been deluded in random ass conspiracy theories

In Britain, this is accepted as fact. Very few people doubt it, although there's more doubt over who the actual paedophiles in power are.

  17. The Texas Killing Fields:

The Texas Killing Fields is an area bordering the Calder Oil Field, a 25-acre patch of land that is situated a mile from the stretch of Interstate 45 known as the "Highway of Hell" because of its high rate of traffic accidents. Since the early 1970s roughly 30 bodies have been extracted from the fields, mainly consisting of young girls. Despite exhaustive efforts by the Texas City Police with the assistance of the FBI, very few cases have been solved. A film, Texas Killing Fields, released in 2011, and a book, Deliver Us, published in 2015, are based on cases from the fields.

The fields have been described as "a perfect place [for] killing somebody and getting away with it." After visiting some sites of the recovered remains in Texas City, Ami Canaan Mann, director of the film The Texas Killing Fields, commented, "You could actually see the refineries that are in the South end of Texas City. You could see the I-45. But if you yelled no one would necessarily hear you, and if you ran there wouldn’t necessarily be anywhere to go.

Between 1983 and 1991, someone used an abandoned oil field on the outskirts of League City, Texas (Houston suburb) as a graveyard for the remains of four young women. 23-year old Heidi Fye who disappeared in 1983 and was found in 1984, and 16-year old Laura Miller who disappeared in 1984 and was found in 1986 both vanished from the same convenience store. Found with Laura Miller was a Jane Doe in her 20s. In 1991, a second slightly-older Jane Doe was found in the area. Heidi and Jane Doe #2 were both beaten to death while Laura and Jane Doe #1 were both shot to death.

A few suspects emerged over the years. The most important one was that of retired aerospace engineer Robert Abel. Able actually bought the property where the remains were located in 1986 so he could build a horse stable and give rides. Able passed a polygraph courtesy of a national news show and the FBI eliminated him as a suspect. Local authorities didn't take their suspicion off Abel. Abel died in 2005.

Serial killer Anthony Shore was also questioned in the cases. He's on death row for the sex slayings of three girls and a young woman between 1986 and 1995 in Houston. Shore confessed that he killed more victims but was never charged with any of the other cases. Shore lived in League City until the mid 70s when he was 13.

Then we have the mysterious letter writer who wrote to Tim Miller (father of Laura Miller and the founder of Texas Equusearch) a few months after Robert Able died. The writer claimed responsibility for the Calder Road killings and possibly more of the I-45 murders. Tim checked the cross which was set up as a memorial to his daughter after he received the letter, the cross was knocked down and pornographic CD's were found next to it. The writer never wrote again and the viability of the claims remains undetermined.

The Calder Road murders of young women were not unique in the Houston area in this timeframe. In fact, from the early 70s to the late 90s, at least two dozen women were either murdered or disappeared in this region, many from the small towns and cities that lay next to Interstate 45 between Houston and Galveston. There was probably a different serial killer who raped and killed several young women and girls in the early 70s. Seven victims aside from the Calder Road victims disappeared or were murdered during the 80s and no suspects were at least publicly identified in those cases. A few other victims were either murdered or disappeared during the 90s.

It's most likely that different serial killers were operating during this timeframe. It's also possible that some of the victims were killed by a single offender. The good news is that Kevin Edison Smith was convicted for the 1996 sex-slaying of 13-year old Krystal Jean Baker who disappeared in Texas City. Time will tell if he could be linked to any of the other cases.

  19. Who killed Rachael Runyan?

Three-year-old Rachael Runyan was abducted from the city playground behind her home in Sunset, Utah on August 26, 1982 by a black man driving a blue midsize car. Twenty-one days later, her body was found dumped in a creek off a dirt road in Morgan County. Years later, a disturbing message was found in a bathroom of a market. The author claimed responsibility and suggested that the murder was part of a Satanic ritual or cult. Police believe that Rachael may have been videotaped in a "snuff film" and that she was molested, abused, tortured, and murdered in it. Her murder remains unsolved.
