    ---===[ NEWS ]===---

    Now, for our first news item, something I only heard about 2 days ago:

    For only the second time in 60 years, the original 1954 Japanese movie

    .
    .

    ゴジラ

    .
    .

    Gojira (Godzilla) will be playing in selected US theaters in a newly restored version.

    News and theater links here:

    http://filmschoolrejects.com/news/original-godzilla-theatrical-rerelease.php

    http://www.rialtopictures.com/godzilla.html

    This is a must see movie, but if you can't get to a theater showing it, it is available on DVD and BD from The Criterion Collection, Classic Media and in England from the BFI (I don't know if the BFI released a BD).

    ---===[ MUSIC ]===---

    Here are 3 suites composed by Akira Ifukube, bases on his scores for Godzilla and other Toho Studio films. See if you know the movie each theme came from.
    Also the Gojira (1954) OST.

  2. I wonder how a Jaeger would fare against Godzilla? G's height ranges from 80-100 meters while Gypsy Danger is 80 m. Plasma caster would most likely do heavy damage to Godzilla, don't know if the chain sword could pierce his hide. But would a Jaeger be able to survive an atomic breath? MechaGodzilla had special armor to be able to tank those hits.

  4. The film, a giant-monster film similar to the Japanese Godzilla series, was produced by the South Korean Shin, who had been kidnapped in 1978 by North Korean intelligence on the orders of Kim Jong-il, son of the then-ruling Kim Il-sung.

    Mecha-King Ghidorah

    Kamacuras

    Gappa

    Varan

    MechaGodzilla

    Gamera

    Gyaos

    Thinking about this, I think the impact from the Plasma Caster discharges could damage Godzilla, but the heat effects would be negligible. Godzilla fell into a volcano at the end of one movie, traveled through the earth's mantle to come out of a different volcano at the beginning of the next movie, so he doesn't seem to be vulnerable to high temperatures.
    The chainsaw swords could do a lot of damage. Gigan was the first kaiju to make Godzilla visibly bleed on screen, using the buzzsaw in his chest and hammer claw hands.
    I think it would also depend on which Godzilla the Jaegers faced. If the Jaegers were facing the GMK Godzilla, FW Godzilla or possibly Burning Godzilla, I think the Jaegers would get by far the worst of it.

    ---=== STUFF ===---

    So, thinking about the weapons used against Godzilla, I came up with a question for you guys:

    What do you think is the coolest weapon
    used in a Godzilla or other Kaiju movie?

    (Not the most effective, just what you think is the coolest).

  12. Probably Super X. Shooting missiles into Godzilla's mouth is a pretty smart move.

  13. Mechagodzilla 2. Providing an even match is interesting.

  14. I think Lion Voltron or an Eva or even one of the angels vs Godzilla would be an interesting fight.

  15. So what is Godzilla's definitive origin? Because I know there's been more than one Godzilla and the bones of one were used to build a Mechagodzilla.

    Posted 1 year ago # Quote
  16. These are the origins given in the movies, although Toho Studios could alter them if they make more movies.

    In the original Godzilla, Dr. Yamane described Godzilla as a creature surviving from the Jurassic Period that was transitional between sea and land animals. It lived in the deep ocean and was driven from there by H-bomb tests. Godzilla's radioactivity was apparently from the H-bomb tests, but Godzilla wasn't described as a mutation. There must have been at least one more of these creatures, since the first died (whose bones were later used to make the third MechaGodzilla) at the end of the first movie and a new one appeared in the second movie.

    (In the next part, you have to realize that the Heisei Series only uses the 1954 Godzilla as background; it ignores the rest of the Showa Series - nice article here)

    In Godzilla VS. King Ghidorah, an origin is given that expands on this. In 1944, on Lagos Island, Japanese troops saw a Tyrannosaurus-like dinosaur (called godzillasaurus later in the movie) which seemed to protect them in a battle with American soldiers, although it was severely wounded. It survived until the H-bomb tests, and the radiation mutated it into Godzilla. This is the one that attacked Japan in 1954.
    Visitors from the future arrive to prevent the creation of Godzilla, and, using time travel and teleportation, remove the wounded godzillasaurus from Lagos Island in 1944, and put it in the deep ocean of the Bering Sea (they also release three small creatures called Dorats on Lagos, which the later radiation mutate into King Ghidorah - see the movie). In the 1970's, a Soviet nuclear submarine sinks where the godzillasaurus was, with the radiation mutating it into a second Godzilla (the one that attacked Japan in 1984). The Japanese government, not knowing this, sends a nuclear sub to recreate Godzilla. The new Godzilla absorbs the radiation from this sub as well, becoming bigger and stronger than the original.
    The third Godzilla was created when the second ones internal nuclear processes went out of control, and the radiation was absorbed by Godzilla Jr., which mutated into the new Godzilla (Godzilla VS. Destroyah).

  20. I've been having some car trouble and haven't kept track of what days the screenings for Gojira (1954) are going to be. I checked tonight and found I missed the first two, and there's a good possibility I won't be able to make tomorrow's. I was going to go with a friend and he said today would have been perfect for him, but he can't go tomorrow. Ah, crap.
