Yeah, This is happening.
While I like the concept, The cosplayers themselves, not so much.

======
I've seen ~ "this"
Not the show itself, but the premise...
SyFy is not ~ "what it used to be" ~ in its SCIFI heyday... its now mostly - "B movie grade" - stuff...
I will say, that I know of Yaya (cosplayer) she's pretty level-headed, is helpful, as well as creative in her cosplays. ~ she does them very well considering her ~ "developed assets".
She's come a long way...
But, most cosplayers don't do the characters justice, mainly because they rush it, don't do enough to maintain the character persona - including - trying to cosplay a character which doesn't suit them or their age!
Vampy (another asian cosplayer) - though asian, is too full of herself, is a fucking turn-off, so a BIG difference is seen between these two cosplayers...
But, don't take my word for it...
Concerning the show..
Don't watch TV anymore.. so its a - 'moot point' - besides its on SyFy, thats enough to deter me from watching - even if - (I had a TV still).
I'll watch the first few episodes. Just out of curiosity, but...

This show seems like it will do more to convince people that cosplayers are bat-shit crazy than anything else.

It kinda reminds me of that show where they gathered a bunch of the most stereotypical of nerds and had them compete in the most stereo typically nerdy type of "events". It was sorta like a reality show type of thing were there were teams and people got voted off.

Maybe? That sounds about right. They had a "Throne of Games" as well. Stupid fuckin' show. Everyone on there seemed so fake. I mean, I've known people that were exactly like that, but still, it felt like most of them were just acting. Then again, I wasn't interested in it int the first place so I just had fun by ripping on it the whole time it was on.
I never actually watched it myself. So I don't really know what to think of it, but looking at reviews. It seems to range from average to terrible.danhibiki said:

Yeah, most nerds aren't the kind of people you'd really like to have on TV. Despite the reputation of being humorously quiet and awkward, they typically have a rather cocky, arrogant demeanor. So they picked the blandest, most stereotypical, inoffensive "nerds" and doubtlessly coached them on how to act for the show.
I did like "Who wants to be a superhero?"
I'd probably watch it for Stan Lee alone, but that's just me.notsure said:

It's no different from how circus bands in the old days have genetically deformed people as one of their attractions for the entire town to scrutinize. Jesus Christ...

I dont know why. The people who are going to be in the series are used to be invited to convention, made to be in front of cameras to this extent, and are comfortable in this sort of setting. On top of that, these girls are all top competitors in cosplay competitions all over the US, even some like Yaya, for all over the world. That is why these cosplayers have been choosen for the first season of this show. Also, higher acknowledged cosplayers like these are bound to get more people to watch in the first season to get a second season signed. or even a third. They require a big wow factor straight out of the gates. That is how television shows like these work. It is a documentary show, not a contest.
All true enough. But none of these people are really going to be known outside of the cosplay fandom, so there's no real "draw" for anyone who isn't already interested.
Which, to me, is the cause for concern. Because the viewing crowd is fairly limited, they will liekly try to push for the usual "reality show" garbage with "OMG teh drahma!!1!" and make cosplayers looks more like freaks and lunatics than people already assume they are just to get the TLC crowd watching.
So while yes, the concept seems nice at first, I am extremely leery of the execution of this first season.

I dont believe that. The cosplay commiunity is certainly a pull, but for people who have no idea what it is, I am certain they explain what cosplay is in the first episode. I have zero doubt they wouldn't. People who dont understand cosplay ask what it is all the time. This is from expereince when walking around places like San Francisco, mall, just places in general, when it isn't Halloween and you are dressed up as a character. I go to tons of gatherings a year and every time it is like a park, restaurant, movie theatre and people always, /always/ ask what we are doing. We reply, "We have having a cosplay gathering." "What is that?" "Well it's---". Thats basically how it is. People who watch the channel know what it is already and those who dont and see these commercials for the show will wonder what it is and who are these girls dressing up have naked/wearing an outfit Ive seen in a movie like Hellboy/Sexy girls and will at least check it out. That is another reason why they have chosen these girls to start out with.
If they choose random cosplayers, take your average one like me, threw them on tv, there wouldn't be much pull for people to watch. They want to show first off the sexier, more experienced ones and get the viewers that way. Even if you dont know what it is, a sexy girl on tv usually sells.

Well, that kinda comes down to a difference of environment.
Quite frankly, people cosplaying in Michigan are just as, if not more likely to get hit upside the head with a tire iron as have somebody hold even a mildly polite conversation with them. Hell, you don't even want to be gay if you live outside of Traverse City.
And people wonder why I don't feel comfortable going to conventions. :/
Thats your experience though. People who like cosplay know what comes from it. The good and the bad from people be it on the internet or in real life and yet we still cosplay. People like you, however, dont really understand how people who cosplay very frequently have come to the conclusion that really it isn't for other people. Not as much as it is for yourself. Your experience as conventions will be a lot different than someone who dresses up for them all the time and those people who dont know what cosplay is and will say things about it being ridiculous or a sin, there are ways to handle it politely and cosplayers do encounter these people by the dozens.
This show is going to be fantastic and I am extremely looking forward to it. They will show the good and bad side of cosplay and there is, by all means, lot of drama, sweat, tears, and blood involved in the cosplay community, so for them to not include it at all is silly.
