I have a fan theory about the Bible. It explains why God is so schizo. In the Old Testament, there are two Gods. One of the two is exclusive to the Old Testament.
The God that appears in both Testaments is called "El" (most often known in the plural form "Elohim"). El is the supreme God and creator of the universe, and disappears (either mostly or completely) from the Old Testament after Genesis. Things like the great flood and the Garden of Eden are his work.
The other God in the Old Testament is "Yahweh". Yahweh is exclusively the God of Israel and is introduced in Exodus 3. He takes over the main "God" role for the rest of the Old Testament and is the guardian of the Jewish people. Ancient Semitic religion had a God for each nation, and Yahweh was in competition with the Gods of other nations (human conflicts are these Gods fighting proxy wars). The power of these Gods waxes and wanes according to how widely worshipped they are, and the worshipping of one nation's God by another is an act of treason. That's why God is so jealous in the Old Testament; if Jews worship other Gods, they are committing treason. And his warlike nature is what makes him jingoistic and genocidal. He is responsible for all the fighting and weird commandments.
In the New Testament, El has done away with the ethnic Gods, and Jesus is meant to represent the end of war; a God for the whole world for the first time since Genesis. A return to the golden age before Yahweh.
Furthermore, El and Yahweh were conflated and seen as the single true God as a way of dealing with the fact that the conquering of Israel by foreign empires would have implied that Yahweh was inferior to their Gods.
Most of this fan theory is 90% plagiarised from (possibly fringe) published theories about the Bible and ancient Semitic religion, although I've put my own twist on it. The bit about Jesus replacing the ethnic Gods is an original idea (as far as I know).
Now that I think about it, if someone saw the Bible as a work of non-fiction, this fan theory could be used as an argument for antisemitism.
btw, since I'm the Pope, this theory is now official Canon
Lol.
