I think it was General Secretary Josef Stalin who said that the true beauty lies in the beholder's eyes (which is pretty fucking weird considering that Dungeons and Dragons was not published until several years after his death). Interior semiotics aside, I do think that what Toshiki says has a lot of merit consider the post-structural analysis (from a liberatory, Bakuninian sense).

  3. I don't quite understand the accusations of "not doing anything" since I think I did make it clear that I am already currently trying anything I have thought up of, and am coming here for advice about what I am currently doing. I did say earlier that I would rather talk about the specifics about creating such groups, since I am not sure if what I am doing is really the best way or not (I have made several posts talking specifically about what I am doing right now, so I did want to talk more about those parts rather than go on about things I made small mentions of), and if anyone might have ideas or advice to offer.

  4. Okay, I'll play along

What have you done? (Not just lamely tried)

Where ia your circle? What are your works? How many people do you have in your circle? How many fans do you have? Which events have you attended, and how much have you sold?

Unless of course, you want people to do things, but you don't want to do anything yourself, in which case this is a crock of shit.

  6. I'll start by saying I have not gone to a convention before, but I plan on going to one. My activities have all been local in nature. I know, this might just be inexcusable for me, but I do hope to rectify that soon.

As I have said before, I am currently attempting to start such a "circle," although I prefer the word "club," since it would be more accurate. I have been spending a few months starting the club, but I admit that my social skills are quite lame, which is probably a contributing factor to the reason why I have not been successful so far, and which is why I would want to ask others for help/advice. In any case, I have gone to my local anime club several times (I started sometime two months ago, due to the advice a friend game me as to where I might find people interested), and have been successful in convincing three people who have not tried drawing before to at least try to start illustrating. However, the bigger problem, of course, is in getting them to do so in their spare time, not just when I am saying that should try. I think that one of them is quite motivated, since he bought a sketchpad after I gave him a demonstration of me drawing in front of him, although I do worry about the two others.

If creating works of my own has one purpose, it would be to encourage others, and the nature of my works somewhat reflects that, in being general in nature. My experience in illustration has been only a little more than 1 year, and I admit that I have been quite sporadic in the time I have spent on it, but hopefully it is more now than in the past. I picked Madoka Magica as the thing to base my illustrations off of (after I started going to the anime club; before, it was mostly Touhou Project), since it was something shown at the anime club, and it seemed to be sufficiently of my interest, as well as of others. I have done quite a few illustrations, and 2 attempts at very short comics (2 pages and 4 pages) related to it, but given that it was only done in the past 2 months, perhaps I did put some effort into it; although admittedly, perhaps I should have spent even more time on it. I have also done a short Seihou Project comic (about 7 pages) even further in the past. They are not posted publicly on the internet at this time (I have focused more on handing them out to those people at the anime club than people online―I am currently handing them out for free), but if anyone here would like to see them, I would be happy to make them available, although you do have to be warned that they are not colored or even shaded (although, looking at the art style of the circle 有言実行, perhaps a lot of shading is not all that necessary). One important thing is that I have been able to break free of my shyness when it comes to making illustrations in front of other people, since it has enabled me to do demonstrations as a way to instruct others who have not drawn before.

A big question would be how often it would be necessary to meet in order to sustain close relations with others. Sometimes, it feels like once a week is not enough, since it hardly feels like I get to hang out with them much that way. However, it does seem to be difficult to meet more often than that, especially when people live more than few miles away, or when they are busy students with labs and projects and tests.

Of course, one question I have would be where to find people interested in this outside of the anime club. The club doesn't have too small of an attendance: around 25 people or so, but even so, restricting myself to only those people seems too restrictive. However, I do not know where I might find people who would be interested, but now that I have been introduced to Madoka Magica (which I have not seen before going to the club), perhaps it might be easier to introduce people using that than using something like Touhou Project. I guess that the conventions that I have not gone to might be a good place, although I am somewhat concerned about if I would meet people who are geographically close enough that I would be able to continue meeting them on a regular basis (say, at least once a week) after the convention. I guess that if there are a lot of people at the convention, I would eventually find people who are close enough to me, but it is still a concern, I guess. It would be nice if I am able to start up this club or "circle" before going to such a convention, though.

  7. I think you aleady have the answer yourself, but if you don't, then let me spell it for you.

First get a few people to follow you before you even think how to get millions to do so.

Judging by your words, you seem to not even be competent at art, storytelling, leadership or even anime knowledge, so how about you start with solving that?

Leaders lead by example, so if you want people to follow you, be ready to at least be as competent as those you want to be followed by.

    In few words,

Stop talking, get your lazy ass up and start doing

  8. I admit that I am introverted by nature, which is why I have difficulty with a lot of things; that is why I am seeking advice as to how to be more outgoing. For example, to get over my fear of small failures, my shyness, etc.

I do have issue with your statement that I am incompetent at art and storytelling, though. It is true that I have just started, but I have at least made an effort, and am continuing to make the effort.

I have often had the fear that I might be fundamentally incompetent in leadership skills, and that I might have to rely on someone else for help... of course that is impossible right now, since there is not really anyone I could rely on. So, of course, the only solution is to fix my incompetence through self-help and gain more leadership skills. Although now that I think about it, perhaps I haven't thought enough about reading existing literature about "how to be a leader," so I guess I shall try that. I think it is a problem within being assertive enough, since I have always been someone to worry first about not offending others than anything else, but perhaps this is not a good way to think if you want to be a leader.

  9. What began as a tl;dr misinformed rant about copyright became a journey of self-discovery. Well done, SanCom.

  13. Once again, I can't tell if this is an extremely caring community or one that loves to hate on others, or both at the same time, from the same people.

    ...Tough love?

Ahem! I've always been a bully, thank you very much!

And most of the time, I'm just being tsundere.

  19. Anime in the West is much more niche than that of Asia. There will never be as huge as a group making fan anime projects here. However, there are much bigger groups making fan projects based on Western made products and series.

So yes, there is a doujin culture in the West, just not in anime. Nor will there ever be one unless anime became main stream, and it won't any time soon.
