SanCom Garage

  1. I've blathered on at length about my screwy car, and all the stuff I've been slowly fixing and tweaking for the last year since I bought her.

So now I'm curious; does anybody else have a car they're playing with? Have a favorite, really weird farm-fix they did once? Or maybe they have newer cars that they just drive and don't need to fiddle with and fix up. Maybe they just like their car, and want to show it off. Maybe it sucks and they want to warn everyone to never so much as look at one. Maybe they want to fondly remember their first ride that some drunk jack-ass totaled when he ran a stop sign and T-boned them.

There was an old thread that was sort of about vehicles, but was mostly a pissing contest about V8's and the eternal "foreign / domestic" debate. In this case, I'd rather see less debate about whose theoretical road-peen is bigger, and just general discussion / pics / mechanical jabber / advice / etc. Yes, I happen to like giant V8's and tiny turbo'd I4's, and I can discuss the pros / cons all day, but I'm not going to run someone into the ground just because they don't follow my particular mechanical mentality and run a V6.

Here's a pic of mine. 1984 Chrysler Laser, 2.2L I4 MPFI, T-03 Garrett Turbo, 5-speed manual. I've rattled on plenty in the day thread about my tinkering to date, so I'll stop there, as I could fill a small book just by recapping.

  5. One of my favorite engines the venerable small block chevy.

Sure it's an old design in but it's simplicity is also part of it's allure and you simply cannot beat it for bang for the buck.

  6. Living in an apartment complex is depressing for anyone who has ever worked on a car. Busted springs seem to be amazingly common. You hear the loose pieces rattling in the strut pans all day long as they drive over the speed bumps. That, and belt / brake squealing. All but one or two vehicles at my building leak radiator fluid, too. Doesn't give me tons of confidence in the repair shops around here, really.

  8. Crap, I knew it wouldn't last. The beefier coil I got a couple months ago is killing my cheap-ass wire set. First one fried out and I got bad missing in cylinder 3, so I replaced it which smoothed it out quite nicely, but now the others are starting to go. Their resistance flakes irratically under standard operating temps. They were cheap, stop-gap Autolite wires.

Getting some Accel wires now. Not exactly the highest quality wires ever, I know, but they are the best I am going to get on my broke-ass budget; not like I can just spring for an MSD setup or something of the like, atm.

Buy a cheap house with a big garage. This is easier in certain parts of the country than in others.

The carbon core ones tend to burn out with high energy ignition systems.
I had the exact something happen on my Trans Am.
Summit should have a good set of performance wires for around $25.
Just make sure it says RFI suppression or spiral core.

hehe, RFI... as much noise as I was getting in my radio, I wasn't surprised at all when the other wires started to give it up.

Yeah, the Accels are spiral core wires. I was able to order a set through AutoZone for about $5 less than they're listed on Summit. Summit has been handy for finding parts and stuff, though; too many other sites gives me garbage results for things that they guess "might" fit my car.

    I never noticed them.

    Now to post something real.......

S13 coupe with SR20DET blacktop. Funny how my car has a smaller engine and a smaller turbo than op's car yet makes more power and is much more reliable.

  15. I see you have JDM side markers, a subtle mod. And are those Razo pedals? And what wheels are you rocking?

Very clean and subtle. Just make sure to keep her secure, S13 are easy as fuck to break into.

  16. I don't think I have enough room to type all of my project cars.
    But a Quick list:
2009 370z(daily driver, not much more than bolt-ons and a simple flash)
2004 Lotus Elise(import, track car only)
1991 3000GT VR-4 (The money pit. I nearly more money in that than everything else combine, save for the 2 Ducati's)
1975 280z (Getting a full RB26 swap, to include AWD, whenever I get time to start it that is.)
    1977 280z RHD (Have a RB25 for that one.)
1971 1/2 240z(still not sure what I'm going to do with it.)
2001 Ducati 996s(Way to much to list)
2008 Ducati 1098s (Nothing the usual: Rear sets, frame sliders, wheel sliders, and some carbon fiber work.)

If you really care, search the forum for pictures.

  17. Here's my beast of a car. No mods here but it's a V6 so its got plenty of power when you need it.

I was considering putting a new exhaust through it to give it that proper V6 sound but so far I haven't been bothered.
