So I'm assuming the game is 3 dimensional because you can rotate the camera. Does that mean that the characters can also move in any direction. Also,I don't really see how it can resemble a top-down shooter in this situation. Can you elaborate?
Well, since I only have the debug mode done (everything is rendered as a simple shape showing the collision detection circles and rectangles), I can just give you a better explanation and example.
Your character can only move along a 2d axis. Moving the mouse just changes the direction you are facing (which is what your camera is locked to). It would be similar to how this camera system works (I may give you a slight angle, like in diablo):
So, in a boss situation, you are going to be dodging attacks on a 2d axis, hence the 2d shooter, but with the freedom of aiming from any direction and a full 360 degree directional movement. In the levels, you are free to progress at your own pace, but you will be forced to make quick decisions as you enter rooms with lots of enemies who will need to be taken down quickly and with the proper tactical approach (well, more veteran players will probably be able to get by with expert dodging and well utilized abilities). You get hit and you bleed, get hit again while bleeding and you die. Last enough seconds, and you will recover. So you basically have two shots and you die, but the mechanic will give you a bit of safety in-case you get grazed.
Not sure if I am going to do the game in 3d or just a stylized 2d that gives it a more 3d appearance. The game will definitely be character based with an ongoing story. How long that story will last depends on whether people like the game or not. If you are interested in hearing the plot at all or want to know how I am doing it, let me know. Otherwise, hope that answers your questions.
