To be honest I can understand them using only a small number of the AKB48 within the Anime. To use all the members would be a massive cast herd, and at that point there would probably be troubles keeping track of all of them or giving them all screentime. (Though thinking back it's kinda amazing that iDOLM@STER gave every girl within 765 Pro at least one episode which focused on them).
Personally I don't have much of a problem with that. If they don't feel they could give every member of the AKB48 screentime, than they shouldn't. Then again, I have no prior connection to the AKB48 before this Anime. Maybe if I liked them prior, I would feel more strongly about this.

Idolmaster was less than 48 lol, they all prolly can fit into the studio, while 48 ppl on the otherhand seems kinda hard lol.

Actually this makes sense as there are 'Sub Groups' in AKB that are the really Money makers. I found a friend on another Anime Forum who is educating me with links and subs to shows of "AKBingo" (the variety show they do) and it is a cottage industry that kinda revolves around 8 or so girls...as one leaves or departs the "inner clique" they have others fill in.
There is an "A" team, A "B" team, and a "K" team - so, I assumed you'd only pick the best 3 of so players from each team. This clip shows a segment called "shoujiki shouji" (which I've also called 'Truth Chess' by fans) and it's basically a Lie-Detector game (maybe's it's rigged for drama) but it's funny cause theirs apparently all types of drama between the girls
From what I've seen only the "Top girls" (one's with a nickname or of note) get picked. I think the show exists to put the lower girls into 'competitions' to see how they'll work on TV or if they make a splash with fans

Well, I guess this is what I get for coming in with no knowledge of the show's subject matter prior.
In a group as big as the AKB48, it makes sense for there to be "Tiers" as it were of Idols.

Dude - it's far more complicated than even I seem to grasp. I saw a video of the 3 best "Punishments" (from 2010) from the 'Punishment Dodgeball' and I can't tell whose a "star" & whose is a 'Peon' but it seems that the show is centered around "Teams" (A, K, B) rather than 1 girl vs 47 others. These punishments are amusing though
This is apparently how 1 game is played - it seems random
*UPDATE TIME!!!*
Just watched ep.4 and I am still in love. There was more delicious melodrama and cheesyness to be had.
Interesting idea of having a generation who basically "Failed" up to this point. The Magenta-haired and the Red-haired (What? This cast is massive, and I have always had difficulty remembering names) girls that were introduced this episode seem like they put in a great deal of effort, but they can't seem to draw in a crowd (or at least keep them interested). Once again we hint back to the idea of "the chosen ones" with this "Soul of an Idol" bussiness, however it does seem that the Red-haired one has her heart/mind in the wrong place. She became an idol so she can fight against the Culture Police, not so she could sing and dance and whatnot. It seems that she views being an Idol solely as being a part of a Revolutionary Militia and not as a Performer. The vibe that I got from the Manager was that Idols are revolutionaries because the Sing, not because they Fight. The guns, mechs and weaponized idol accessories are there because there are Culture Police who are hostile to them, but the Singing, the Performances and the connection to the fans is the essential part (not to say the fighting is not awesome, which it is).
People like Chieri and the Red-haired girl, who are not savvy to the power of friendship will probably have the hardest time gaining "The Soul of an Idol" as it were (Though at least Chieri seems interested in the Song and Dance part, the Red-haired girl doesn't even seem to realize that as important. It's like trying to use an Axe instead of a Kitchen Knife to do your precise chopping). Though once again I enjoyed this episode and it was filled with some awesome scenery porn as well.
Also, who else thought that dance instructor was a Woman until he opened his mouth?

^ I concur...
I watched the soft sub of the AKB48 documentary "The Show Must Go On!" (I have links!) I now have a better understanding of the allure of AKB48 and how the inner-workings move. It's essentially more about the "Election" (rankings) than I realized.
The Rankings determine who is favored or more likely to be on a TV appearance. Top 6 (or 8) are the Prime Idols. Even the difference between #5 & #8 is staggering in terms of coverage.
The group of girls you see on TV shows are usually the Top 16 (or 21). There seems no difference if you're like #22 or #32 as you are outside the bubble regardless of team.
The "Friendship" - 'Soul of an Idol' makes a lot of sense as these girls really pull for each other and when Yuko #2 & Maeda #1 start collapsing due to 'Heat Stroke' (and other issues) at a concert - The other girls fill in and are heart broken- They really do look up to each other. There are also rivalry's and one girl who lost ranks and fell to #8 (she went down)- you could see she felt as if she was being 'Phased out' (I barely see her in the current stuff).
It's hysterical when they interview the 'Lesser Ranked' Idols (who are used as extra's in PV like #13 or #11) cause you can tell they know they're "Trees" or Chorus but they work hard in their own way - but are essentially "nameless" to an outsider. There's even a "Team 4" (of younger Idol's who appear to be the Junior Class) behind Team K that I suppose are "Minor league" waiting to get into A,K, or B.
Basically AKB48 is really AKB12 or 21 and it is pulled heavily by the top 6 girls (My Idol is Mayuyu who is #5) as the last Rankings

I wanted to get more familiar with the structure & workings of AKB48 before I seriously watched the Anime - so I'll see how the Anime girls are treated next to their live counter-parts. Like is Yuko in love with Kojima's character? and such.
You can DL "AKBingo" from these sites:

If only the mecha didn't look so much liek battle tech mecha, I'd probably give it better credit.
So I went back to watch Episode 1 after they said 13th Acchan retire but they saw her when they were young, and the Opening when they sang that 2 song was really nice, its give me a weird feeling. And there I notice they were 16 member at first instead of 9.

Thx for the info tho, but I mean in the anime, which I think got nothing to do with the current real AKB48 for now at least?
well, the AKB48 girls are doing ALOT of the voices and I think they do themselves (and the songs)
This video shows which Seiyuu does which character from the show
There's only a handful of top AKB48 in it - the other characters appear to be done by the younger 'sister' spin-off groups like SKE48, NKE48, and such - they're under the AKB brand but they do their own stuff so I guess it's not ALL AKB48 - it looks more like a star-vehicle for Mayu Watanabe who is being groomed to be the next "center" I guess.
Finally cleared episode 5, they mention all the previous Center mysteriously went missing, I wonder why.
