It's more or less have to do with how we view ourselves and how others views us. Badly, we go by what we think (not really know) others view us. As with the joking I sometimes joke with them. I also do this just in case (and maybe bad habit) there's someone who have met few black people or had bad experiences with them to latch negative views on them.
In any case, the only way the negative stereotypes end, or at least die down, is to do the opposite and not be defensive. Talk is cheap, actions speak. If they still view you in such way, be persistent but live life for you.
