  2. Aw beans! Just realized that this rally will coincide with my visit to DC. Just what I need, a pleasant vacation marred by loud opinionated people trying to sell me the religion of non-religion. Just great. I'll see if I can reschedule things and NOT visit DC on the 24th.

I tend to nowadays, just want to stay away from anyone who calls themselves an atheist, or even brings up the topic in the first place.

Then you're in the wrong place.

Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that establishes symbols that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values.

If the exact opposite of the definition of religion means that its a religion, then yeah, atheism a religion. Just like Christians being followers of the creator, Satan.

I know. But I didn't play RPG's for hours and hours trying to raise my coercion and persuasion stats, just to fail continually in real life. Sometimes that 1% chance of persuasion actually goes through!

  13. Science is not the opposite of religion...it is also a religion. It also uses symbols, tries to advocate that it is based on the god "Fact" and accepts (almost) nothing as "Truth" that cannot stand the trial of the scientific method, the "Bible" of science. How close to that ideal actual scientists practice their religion is questionable, as true of religious figures. They fall short of the ideal, yet it is what they strive for.

Scientists like Isaac Newton were not at all in conflict with religion or religiosity. Newton for one believed his work in physics, optics, calculus, what have you, were ways of "Proving" the existence of a "God," and that there was order in the world, a world that followed natural laws created by nature's "God".

There are no creation stories in science? What about the theory of the big bang? There are no apocalyptic stories? How about the scientific debate concerning how the world will end? Science can be as dogmatic as religion.

Oh my goodness...I turned into Gantz. Kill me now.

  14. Dear Thomas Morrow.
You are being retarded right now, but I think that you aren't. Please prove one of those.

I didn't realize factual information was a mystical being

    oh wait, it's not

  16. It's called scientific RESEARCH. Not scientific FAITH.

It is not for me to say which of these I am. My opinion is just that, an opinion, and just because I say things that perhaps run counter to what you expected me to say does not have a bearing on my intelligence. A fool may speak wisdom from time to time, and a genius may say something foolish. I claim to neither be fool nor genius...just a humble poster putting down what I think. We disagree on some things, but agree on other matters, and that is perfectly ok.

This and fact=\=things that require faith.

The big bang theory made predictions which were shown to be true(like cosmic background radiation) and is based on the observation of red shifting in the light of stars(and was developed by a catholic priest btw).
The speculations about the end of the world are mostly speculations, that's why there are a lot of them, but the heat death of the universe is most likely true.

One cannot always prove facts right away, and there are certain supposed facts that cannot be proven at all. There are times when the scientist must make a leap of faith and go with what they think is most correct, no?

For example, regarding the death of the universe...

The death of the universe cannot be proven until end times, so science does not have the answer. Science cannot satisfy fact because there are things that it cannot prove. So what's wrong with letting religion coexist to fill in the gaps that science leaves behind?

So turning to the god of the gaps, eh?
If something is a matter of faith, then it's no longer science.

The heat death of the universe doesn't mean that the universe will cease to exist, it just means that there won't be enough energy to form big chunks(like stars, planets etc,)
