You realize in Japan almost no one has a yard, I tell you wut. And these melons are obviously catered to gourmet and upscale customers.

Tokyo does not represent all of Japan.
Yes there are places in Japan where people do not live like weaver birds.
BTW you can raise them in containers on a roof top or even on a patio balcony.

Yes I'm going to rag this because anyone who would spend $200 on a melon is an idiot.
But then people that stupid deserve to be separated from their money.

Are you forgetting to take into account the fact that Japan is an expensive country to live in and goods are priced higher than in the US? Look at anime pricing, $80 for one BD that has two episodes.

Didn't the first volume of Hidan no Aria only have 1 episode?

A lot of dedication and pain to do.
Still, I'd probably not buy a $200 dollar melon.

Dude, Gardening is hard as shit.
I could barely grow a potato. ;_; (insects, weather, laziness, oh my!)

Last year I grew a bunch of sweet potatoes in a container all I had to do was water them every two days.

I think this time I going to try raising them in tires.

For my tomatoes and melons I'm going with a raised bed and likely will rig up an automatic watering system as last year I lost a lot of them to the heat wave and drought.

  7. This reminds me of the expensive strawberries I saw in Kyoto when I visited back in '08.

    Damn...
Well, I rarely watered them, plus the weather is pretty cold and unstable up here North.

  9. Oh, and with regards to the expensive melons, if there was a way to make tasty melon bread...using those expensive melons...it *might* be worth it.

Correction! They're the second most intelligent creatures on Earth! Humans are first.

  17. I was at a basement grocery store and saw a bunch of over priced fruit. Hard to believe someone will actually buy it.

Actually, outside of central Tokyo, single-family homes dominate the suburbs. They're just on lot sizes that are really small, except for Hokkaido. At least the Japanese don't find it a good thing to cram families into those god-awful duplexes that plague a certain other island country on the opposite end of the Eurasian landmass...
