   Once again, the japs have outdone themselves in their faggotry. This time, they're paying ridiculous amounts of money for fruit. $200 for a melon, $25 for an apple or $7 for a single strawberry. Filthy foreign fruit incurs a hefty tariff in order to protect Japan's autistic and obsessive-compulsive farmers.

   

   Melons are apparently so precious to the Japs that they put hats on them to protect them from the sun. They probably also give them names. Like melon-tan.

   

   I know want to see a fruit-themed slice of life anime, with a polite and intelligent but timid melon from an upper class family acting as the sidekick to a group of normal, average strawberries and apples.

   you haven't taken a second look at those pics have you?

   they're pristine perfect examples which is why they are being charged at top Yen.

   In western markets, you will see blemished, and occasionally less than perfect produce. Most of the less than ideal apprearing produce ends up getting processed for resturants and ready made prepackaged foods.

   But Japanese farmers go out of their way to make all of their produce - as perfect as possible, even their second rate produce looks better than western produce. Which is why they baby it and make the presentation "ideal". All the extra effort, has a price that only drives up the cost to the consumer.

   Imports do have to pay a tarrif, but they also have to pass stringent standards, what doesn't pass ends up as being turned in juice, sauce, or processed into something else like fancy garnish or sumtink like candy, or other packaged foods you take for granted.

   Prestige comes with a price, if you sell perfect goods, you can charge a premium. To cover costs to do business. Its a seller's market no matter how you look at it.

   Poor folk, have to make do with what the 1 percenters leave for them in the commoner's markets.

    Various (shared) aspects of East Asian cultures make Asians far more vulnerable to Veblen goods.

    If I went to Japan and tried to sell my own shit for ¥1, the japs wouldn't touch it. If I tried to sell it for ¥100,000, there'd be a stampede of salarymen brawling with each other for an opportunity to buy such exclusive, high quality shit.

    Are you forgetting to take into account the fact that Japan is an expensive country to live in and goods are priced higher than in the US? Look at anime pricing, $80 for one BD that has two episodes.

    The cost of living is nowhere near that much greater. Anime publishers just know that otaku have nothing else to spend their money on.

    I agree that much for fruit is some industrial level faggotry.

    Sorry but there is zero excuse that that level of price gouging even a pristine textbook perfect melon is only worth $20 at the very most.
    I can get some dam good cantaloupe at the farmers market that probably taste better then these for under $10 each.
    If they can't provide produce for a reasonable price then they deserve to be buried by imports.

    I mean if you have a yard even a small one you can raise melons yourself it's not hard at all which is what I'd do long before I'd pay that kind of price.

    As for the packaging used for everything that is the most ecologically irresponsible packaging I have ever seen used for fruit completely inexcusable.
    It would be less of a burden for the environment for the fruit to have flown over on a jet also would be a lot cheaper.
