  1. Once again, I'm behind on the news.

Morbidly obese yaoi fangirl Jennifer "Hambuger" Hepler was recently shocked and outraged to receive criticism for saying that games would appeal far more to women if players didn't actually have to play them and could skip all interaction.

Hamburger Helper suggested that games should have a button that allows players to skip the "playing" parts and go straight to the cutscenes, in much the same way that cutscenes can be skipped by players wishing to go straight to the action. She apparently does not see the obvious problem with this: that any video game that allows the player to skip the action is not an actual game and becomes simply a "video"*.

She was rightly put in her place (the kitchen amirite) for this by the internet community. Unfortunately, she has made things far worse for herself by not only failing to understand what was wrong with what she said, but blaming sexism for the nasty comments she received. Apparently, a male developer who said something like this wouldn't be mocked at all, and anyone who disagrees with her is jealous because she works in the game industry and claims to have a vagina hidden underneath her flab. Naturally, this caused the backlash to grow stronger, creating a vicious circle in which she and her white knights (see this ridiculous article on destructoid; don't read the comments: they're stupider than the ones we get on the front page) continue to blame sexism for her being called out on her retardedness. A senior figure at BioWare went as far as to donate $1000 to "Bullying Canada", an organisation whose name suggests that it's devoted to the noble task of bringing those arrogant canucks down a peg.

It is notable that she is the only sexist one here, since she seems to imply that women in particular would want to do something as retarded as buying something called a "game" and not actually playing it.

She is also an author of gay pornography disguised as shitty sci-fi/fantasy, so you might think that she should go back to writing. But she's also shit at that. Or maybe her one-star reviews are from people jealous that she has a vagina.

    *And no, VNs aren't games.

    Honestly, people these days.

I think she lost the remote in one of her fat folds. Or she ate it.

Now she has to play games.

    Lol!

I feel horrible for finding this funny, but I can't help it.

  11. God, this bitch is dumb. And fat, too. That's a horrible combination.

I remember a few years ago when Nintendo talked about including an option in there games to let the game play itself through levels that the players die too much on (or something like that). I don't know if that was ever implemented, but it certainly wasn't viewed as a good idea by gamers.

  12. I find it funny people are raging over this.

It was. What happens is the game plays a video to show you how to do it. It doesn't actually play the game for you.

Yeah, that was on The New Super Mario Bros. Wii. But you have to put in some incredible effort to unlock it: dying 8 times in a row on the same stage. To this day, I still haven't been able to unlock it.

Yes it does. You can even choose to take over from it again once it's cleared the part you couldn't do.

  14. Damn, Kudi. This article was well written.

Obviously, she's never played a Tales game. Having to relive the dialogue of those games (minus Phantasia and Symphonia) are a pain in the ass.

  16. well that explains why mass effect 3 has three 'difficulties', one combat-centric, one story-centric, and one in-between.
I forget what the demo said, but basically you don't make any choices at all in the cutscenes, and there's no inventory or, I guess, journal... and the story-centric (roleplaying) setting has all enemies being tough as air.

I played the hybrid setting... and my character had a 'carry-weight' thing in the talents... but there was no inventory.

    as for her.
I can only partially see where she's coming from.
back when I was working, I never had the time to get into a 100+ hour game, but those kinds of games have always been the ones I got the most out of in the past (FF7-10, fallout, oblivion, etc).
so at that time, I played the 4-5 hour games instead...
now that I'm studying, I have all the time in the world though :P

this this this. you're mad about video games op lmao

    edit:

Realtalk: Bioware games are so pathetically easy that you might as well be able to skip action scenes and dive right into the nerd-bait "romance" scenes so that creepy losers can write their fanfiction after they're done or whatever.

  19. This was the Interveiw that started it all which cause all the hate against her on the internet.

"What is your least favorite thing about working in the industry?

Playing the games. This is probably a terrible thing to admit, but it has definitely been the single most difficult thing for me. I came into the job out of a love of writing, not a love of playing games. While I enjoy the interactive aspects of gaming, if a game doesn't have a good story, it's very hard for me to get interested in playing it. Similarly, I'm really terrible at so many things which most games use incessantly - I have awful hand-eye coordination, I don't like tactics, I don't like fighting, I don't like keeping track of inventory, and I can't read a game map to save my life. This makes it very difficult for me to play to the myriad games I really should be keeping up on as our competition.
And with a baby on the way in a few months, my minimal free time (which makes it impossible for me to finish a big RPG in less than six months already), will disappear entirely. If there was a fast-forward feature on games which would let me easily review the writing and stories and skip the features that I find more frustrating than fun, I'd find it much easier to keep abreast of what's happening in the field.

If you could tell developers of games to make sure to put one thing in games to appeal to a broader audience which includes women, what would that one thing be?
    [...]
The biggest objection is usually that skipping the fight scenes would make the game so much shorter, but to me, that's the biggest perk. If you're a woman, especially a mother, with dinner to prepare, kids' homework to help with, and a lot of other demands on your time, you don't need a game to be 100 hours long to hold your interest - especially if those 100 hours are primarily doing things you don't enjoy. A fast forward button would give all players - not just women - the same options that we have with books or DVDs - to skim past the parts we don't like and savor the ones we do. Over and over, women complain that they don't like violence, or they don't enjoy difficult and vertigo-inducing gameplay, yet this simple feature hasn't been tried on any game I know of."

I don't really have a issue with her saying that for some reason people are upset because that's what she said.

Don't you see the retardedness of wanting to play a game without there being any actual "playing" involved? It shows an unprecedented level of stupidity.

And she dug her own grave when she blamed all her criticism on people being jealous of her vagina.
