I'm referring to this article. I acknowledge that this is a rant, but a rant with purpose (I hope). I welcome any INTELLIGENT discussion.
From reading the article, I am astounded by the ignorance of many Sankaku Complex users (though some may argue that it's not astounding). If many of you have done your research you would know that this is very impressive and has the very real possibility of being *gasp*... SAFE and SECURE.
Pre-fabricated homes are not new. Pre-fabricated buildings are uncommon, but the Empire State Building was partly built with this concept in mind. Link. This building in question employs the same basic principles as the construction of the Empire State Building, only further worked upon and improved.
Additionally, the most glaring blindness I noticed in the comments section of the article was the assumption that the design of the building was rushed. This is a pre-fabricated building, so the majority of its parts were manufactured (presumably with precision) well ahead of its date of assembly—of which we see in the video.
And what's this? Windows, dry wall, and floorboards in American constructions are ALSO pre-manufactured? *GASPS* The only difference I see here—and I'm no engineer—is that in the USA, the majority of the time it takes to build a home is from having to build the structure and foundation of EVERY part of the house as they are not pre-assembled. Imagine the time it takes to build all of these on site:
(If the links are dead, search for images of buildings/houses/skyscrapers under construction)
In this case, the construction of the building mentioned in the article merely simplified the construction process, with the Chinese engineers realizing they can just build the structural frames in a factory where it is more efficient than building it at the construction site. When they finished building the parts they just deliver them and do all the necessary connections at the site, which I'm assuming is important but relatively easy job to have done right. In essence, this is no different than putting together a computer, and we all know how reliable doing that is.
Seems like a sound and innovating building process, but I'm no engineer.
"But didn't you read the articles about the collapsed train, sinking ship, collapsed buildings, and all sorts of other China fail?"
Of course I did. But come on, China has a population of over 1 billion people and is a pretty sizable area. You are bound to see differing standards of building quality, and corruption in this densely-populated country. For sure you can't truthfully say that the USA or even Britain, Russia, or Brazil as a whole have the same building standards throughout their regions.
For some reason, I have some level of trust and respect for Broad Group (the name of the Chinese construction company). Of course, even still I won't want to stay in that hotel until it there is compelling evidence that this innovative building meets adequate safety standards, and that information is scarce at the moment. I want to see how [proficient] engineers from around the world evaluate this building, and if they would certify it safe to live in.
