My problem with most people that say outloud that they are masochists or like bondage and S&M is that most often than not, they aren't 100% sure about it in bed which simply makes me understand that they never really tried it. Some of them actually love it afterwards, some of them say that "I didn't expect it to be like THAT" (since they expect playful slaps on the ass and... well, gay stuff.)
And yeah well you can say that playful slaps on the ass counts as "playful S&M" but real S&M is much more about trust than it is about the violence part. It's a game about dominating and being dominated and quite honestly, a game that is hard to play with people who have no imagination.

I don't like the unrefined parts of S&M. There's more to it than simply inserting needles in each other, come on.
How fun is it to simply hit each other? There has to be the balance, the one who gives the orders and the ones who obey.
Since it's hard to do the kind of things I like with someone I don't trust, I'd give it a really soft start. Use a blindfold and handcuffs, make them stand on the kness with their hands tightly bound to each other behind their back and make those buttocks red as cherries. In that position, no matter who you are, you are going to feel defenseless.
^If they can do that, then the show has begun and it's about to get real good.

I was told once that I was "too defiant to be a submissive." It was at a fetish night at one of the local clubs. I've a high pain tolerance, so B&D/S&M was actually fun for me (and as you say Antika - there's a balance) because the mistress at the time was very skilled in her, in my opinion, craft (an art-form in and of itself). The better the person who is dominant, the easier it is to trust them as they can modify the play to suit each individual. This, I believe, is the most important aspect of S&M - knowing intrinsically the limits of your partner(s).
And, yes, as mentioned previously, I do know that S&M, B&D, and D&S, are all different things. I appreciate the distinctions ~ and of those, I think that the interchange between being dominant and submissive is the most enjoyable, although some mild/moderate B&D is pleasing too! While I'm good with pain - S&M isn't my most favourite thing (unless it's done very well).
