They've been like that since forever, they're bound to change eventually, specially with globalization. One generation ago Korean youth still ate dogs, nowadays they already hate dog eaters in general, that kind of cultural thing gets overridden fast, you know what doesn't? Husbands killing wives.
Do they still eat live squid? Culture changes fast, that's true. Just kill off one generation and give no continuity to the next and you pretty much start off with a blank slate.

Aggression is a strong response to a negative state of being. People no longer recognize witnessing murder and violence as negative states but merely "things that happen" because they, personally, are so far removed from violence. They no longer know what to make of it when they see it, so their only reaction is the natural reaction to fear the unknown and thus they flee.
It's rather like being hungry. You think of it as perfectly reasonable to eat because you've done it a million times as a response to the negative feeling of hunger. If you take a man who has been fed automatically before he ever experienced hunger for years by machine with a tube in his gut, and then remove the machine, he will have no way of knowing what to do when he becomes hungry for the first time. After such a long period of time of relying on the machine, he will be terrified of the strange sensation of hunger, and then die of starvation because his natural instinct to consume food will have been quashed.
Same thing with violence. People have their natural, violent instincts suppressed by society from day one, so they have no idea how to use it when they need to.
Interesting take on the matter.
