     This is actually a pretty intriguing question. I'd like to know more about this too. Specifically, how is Shinto practiced in the real-life modern Japan, and how do the typical Japanese view Shintoism in general, not just how it is portrayed in anime and manga.

     Here for Clownjack I haves a Japanese Question for you;

     Why is Seasoned Kombu not exported in larger numbers?

     all the outlets (US mainland retailers) that have the stuff is always completely sold out.
     even my sources in Hawai'i have difficulty keeping it in stock.

     Also Ume or Japanese Pickled Plums are a commodity that is difficult to find.

     Could you recommend any retailers that could fulfill an order outside of Japan?

     There is one retailer in Roseville California, that carries asian food stuffs - but most of their inventory is arabic, korean & chinese.

     Its very difficult for Japanese to get Japanese comfort food in the USA

     There is no specific anime. Asagiri no miko, if it is a romance.
     Japanese people are not conscious of Shintoism. Many people regard themselves as irreligious. An anime director is also the same. Their expression is an unconscious expression. ZUN is conscious. The Chinese world is also included in Touhou.　Not only Shintoism but various religion is mixed. Japanese religion is complicated. If there is an English-language edition, I will recommend you Motohiko Izawa's book.

     Kombu and Umeboshi are always in the supermarket in Japan. However, the maker does not remember.
     These food may not be exported a lot under the influence of Fukushima. When Kombu is out of stock, I recommend you Sukombu of a Japanese cheap candy.

     By the way, 2ch is causing big uproar now. Because, By Sutema trouble, it was discovered that a possibility that control of a company is intervening in information or word-of-mouth communication of a subculture is high.
