Locations, pilgrimage and Anime tourism

  1. As I started lurking around the webs trying to find the locations of random Animes, I stumbled upon this site

    http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/animemap/index.html

and so I thought I'd bring the topic here.

Yes, most anime take place in fictitious towns, but quite a few take place in real cities, or take their settings inspiration from real locations.

I couldnt find a similar thread to necro, so here we go!

Post/talk/discuss any places you may know/have spotted in anime

  7. Well just going somewhere because you saw it in an anime is pretty retarded, but some of those places are still general tourist attractions.

  8. I find all tourism consisting of visiting places you've seen in movie or in anime or wherever to be a complete waste of time; unless the place is really cool and you only realized it after you saw it on tv. Like when I was in Tokyo a few friends were excited 'cause they wanted to go to the "Womb", a local featured in "Lost in translation". As much as I am attracted to Scarlett Marie Johannson, as much as I totally love Bill Murray and god, if there's a reason I become an actor one day is because I want to be like him, I couldn't care less of the womb. Also, €60 to enter.

No thanks. I mean, if you look at that video Deth posted, it's just alleys, squares, nothing worth visiting...

Oh, but I did spot one place - Shinjuku station, east entrance. It's in every anime which takes place in Tokyo. And... Hachiko statue! That too is extremely common. It's funny because Hachiko statue is just outside the eighth entrance to shibuya station, and hachiko could also be written as "eighth entrance".

  9. When i seen the title i taught it is a thread where people would make a list of anime shops around the world... or US since many are from there... example: if you pass throw x place you can find the y shop... i was so wrong...

But a thread about finding the locations you see in anime is nice to... im sure that everybody from sancom except me live or visited Japan and know all places...

  10. mmm Marumon, you make a good point. I guess we could use this thread for both purposes.

As for the real locations found in anime, I meant mostly major places (buildings, temples, shrines, landmarks, lakes, etc) not alleys and small shit that otherwise would be irrelevant.

In any case, lets expand it to include what Marumon said

    =======

I shall - "beg to differ" - on this...

What (most) - "O-TACO's" - fail to realize is the importance of whatever is present in the animu and or animated film.

Even the slightest/meaningless of location appearances is in fact quite important...because (even if) - "only one" - has seen it, it will be remembered.

~ and what about those scenes that are depicted in that - so called - (useless) area? - is it still - "unworthy"? - for considerations.

One may not make a pilgrimage to it (or) to that specific area - nonetheless - you're aware of it.

    Case in point:
Would you go (just out of curiosity) to the alley, where Yuki Nagato and Asahina Mikuru met in subtle confrontation, while they were filming that scene from Haruhi from the first season?

What about that pole that Mikuru hit while protecting Itsuki Koizumi?

I am sure that there are varying opinion(s) of what is important verses what is not and that is (always) subjective.

But, to me, like when I watch animu on a regular basis, ALL FACETS of the animu are important, its just dependent on the viewer.

  12. I guess the main thing I'm trying to get is to leave out the places that would be irrelevant to the plot.

Most anime would have a scene in an alley or a shopping center, but they would not normally play a relevant part in the development of the story or the plot.

I for example, would like to see (if its real) the pedestrian overpass where Ohana and Ko-chan met when she was running and crying in Tokyo, or the stairs/alley that led to Yuka & Kohta's house, as the former was a great scene that moved me, and the latter was a constant element in the series. Even the park where Sato and Misaki would meet (NHK) would be great to visit.

But I wouldnt care to visit the sidewalk where some character was walking or waiting for the bus, and added nothing to the story.

    Did that make some sense?

  13. Some say Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away" idea was inspired from here:

    Btw, it's not in Japan.
It's at (Formosa) Taiwan's Jiufen (New taipei city, Northern), opposite China.
Too bad, soon or later, China is going to acquire the whole Taiwan like Hong Kong SAR.
