Fate

  1. Does it exist?

I've seen this theme in many media, events which are destined to happen. Despite my beliefs about infinite universes and every possibility existing, I can't help but wonder: what determines which path we experience? Is our perception of freedom and choice just an illusion?

  2. Where you bored when you wrote this ? Either way this is an interesting topic. I think personally you get a lifespan of free will. sure somethings are "meant to be" maybe. That does not mean you cant make you own choices and live your life own life since we only have one life to live.

No, it had been brewing in my mind for a bit and inspired from the recent episodes of Steins;Gate.

  4. What is fate? Something that has been predetermined?

Why was it predetermined? What predetermined it? Fate sounds similar to the concept of God...

    Philosophy gives me a headache...

  5. Yesterday I didn't feel like going to buy groceries during the morning, so I postponed until the afternoon. I was yet to decide on what to do for dinner on the day after (which is today by now). So I go to the usual store and find some porchetta. The gentlewoman handling desk with bread, cheese and salami/ham/etc. also had some porchetta. And she said that usually it never lasts until the afternoon, but today they brought over there a 10kg worth of porchetta.

It was fate, man! I just bought it without a second thought, and that's what I'm gonna get for dinner today.

I wanted some, but wasn't even hoping for it - must have been fate.
Even though I believe fate is what we call a series of coincidence which make us act in a certain way, or prevent us from; do you ever find yourself thinking about a day where nothing happened, and call it "fate"? Usually it's only when something remarkable takes place, be it good or bad...

Not exactly the same kind of fate I had in mind. Your example is more like "the hand of fate" guiding events to your favor (or unfavor). I was thinking more like everything is scripted out and we are just actors playing our roles.

All the world's a stage and all the people merely actors is a line attributed to Shakespeare. And it is written in Ecclesiates that there is nothing new under the sun. People also say that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Some behavioral scientists believe that those who fail to learn socially acceptable behavior/responses for a given situation during childhood will forever make the same mistakes as an adult. And many cultures believe that life, and even existence itself, is cyclical: Going from creation/birth to completion/maturity to destruction/death over and over again. In such a case, we could be playing out the type of fate you're thinking of in a statistical sense in that in doing what we feel we want, we are doing what people before us have been doing or wanted to do and thus getting results similar to what's happened in the past.

  15. In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own will.

  18. I personally don't like Fate (the belief)I see it as a poor excuse for when something happens whether or not it went my way. Nothing is set in stone and what I do is my choice >.>

  19. back to topic, my opinion, fate exist...

palm reading, tarot, and other form of future prediction of your life are something hard to be proven in science, but more often they are accurate. The prediction will never be specific, but it give you enough clue of your incoming fate, and how you were bound by it.

My mom had shitload of fortune teller story that comes and goes around from friends/neighborhood and fellow chinese community who have meet fortune teller and tell story about it (there are of course hit and miss, but the story that goes around are those that hit the target...and usually the reason some of the prediction are missed bcoz the fortune teller is not genuinely powerful, or just con artist)

people tend to be skeptical about fate, but i find it magnificent. How the line of your palm, time and date you were born, your horoscope. They all actually telling everything about your future.

Yes, you decide your own fate, but for most part, it never really break the divergence meter of 1%...it's just slight alteration but end result is still the same
