Formaldehyde in Chinese beer

  1. Sorry to throw more fuel on the China fire, but... it is what it is. Also, the Chinese people deserve better than this, and there's a little chance awareness will help to solve it!

Some Chinese beer has been known to contain formaldehyde. At first I thought it would be a tiny amount as a brewing byproduct in all beer or something, but... no. It seems to be an additive - though it doesn't exceed WHO's drinking water standards.

It's sad. Why sell out your countrymen like this just to save a little cash? The crassness of this kind of thing really angers me.

  2. Now I'm even more glad, that all our brewers have to stick to the German purity law from 1516 (only hops, malt, yeast and water).

  3. I'm surprised the beer isn't exploding.

China's scientists are already working on that, they should perfect it by the end of the current moon cycle.

  5. In all actuality, this is rather old news, and very old at that...

In addition to the Chinese venture...

Beer has been tainted with that - very formula - in the Vietnam War era (from what I recall) and which was spoken to me by fellow Vets of that era.

From what I was told, it was sold as is.. usually in Dangang bars and was a locally brewed concept which contained the formaldehyde.

  8. I guess they figured if it could keep monkey brains and fetal pigs from rotting it'll keep beer fresh.
    That's Chinese logic for you.

I'm sure it is... It sounds like they've at least started to move away from it too - and I've heard some say they don't believe they do this with export beers.

Also, of course if it meets the health standards, you could probably drink a huge amount without imminent danger (alcohol aside, lol) but for me it's the idea of deliberately adding a toxic carcinogen to a food product to clarify and preserve it? There are other ways to get that result without risking as much harm to people... but I'm sure it costs another penny a bottle.
