  1. Been wondering what the hell is up with Japan's mainstream music scene and the persistence of music trends that should be canned already(karaokeing pop 'idols' and pretty boybands with no musical talent).

Interestingly, I found this while looking for reviews on Takotsuboya's K-ON doujins. They tie real well eh? lol

You might wanna skip to part 4 though. Writer seems to know his shit real deep. Read the comments too.

The writer seems to suggest some very striking statements, like:

"The end result, however, is that these firms (1) promote “created” idols over self-motivated talent (2) emphasize pleasant looks and demeanor over artistic talent (3) invest most time and resources into lucrative advertising deals rather than creating “culture.”"

"But take the case of GLAY. They got into management company problems when they went independent. Then they completely disappeared despite being one of the best selling bands in Japan ever."

In the US, Warner and Sony seems to hold rights to anything that has some semblence of rhythm, but at least you guys have a relatively wide range of music for the mainstream(teen pop, attention whoring pop, sex-and-violence hip-hop, emo and maybe country).

In Japan, it feels like the mainstream crowd only knows 'plastic pop'...

I'm not going to judge you for liking shitty music(or maybe I just did... lol) but it makes me feel crazy to know that if one corporation holds 20% of the mass-media exposure(Johnny's), that 20% will be all plastic pop.

Any of you Japanese residents care to share your side of the story? Though I don't think you watch TV much, lol.

  2. Unfortunately, most Japanese Pop Artists are ruled by their Corporate Supporters/labels.

Very few have the luxury of total independence when it comes to creativity.
    Unlike western musicians.

Its just the way their entertainment industry is set up.

Which is why you have the "idol" agencies and middlemen who can make or break artists in the business.
    -------

I actually pefer J-Pop to western pop artists, mainly as Char put it "90% of western pop is crap". Because I'm quite fond of love ballads & sagas common in lots of Jpop artists. Also there is more "original" composed music, because of their corporate supporters they can have and use Orchestration with classical instruments, from a few strings (violla & cello) to full symphonic support with a rockband. They're more creative and versital.
For a western independent - this usually costs lots of money.

  5. The way "pop" in Japan is controlled is indeed a problem. But that doesn't mean all of the music is terrible.

I like how Japanese pop is a lot more electronic and cutesy overall than of most countries. And Utada Hikaru has a really pretty voice. I definitely haven't found most American pop better than most Japanese pop. I've found most American pop unstomachably annoying.

Unless American pop includes artists like "Death Cab For Cutie". Those are okay. But stuff like Katy Perry makes me want brain bleach. I don't even like to think about the fact stuff like that exists. While on the other hand Utada Hikaru is soothing and I find it personally very beautiful.

I figured it was obvious I meant "everything except me or anything I have created." You should know by now I'm an exception to these kinds of things.

When companies can literally control what genre of music most people like, there is something wrong there...

    It's why music sucks everywhere.

You're cute? Go sing! Slap some autotune digital enhancements on it, add a cheesy tune.. guaranteed success! Mainstream music is always bad with a few exceptions of course.

At least the backstreet boys/nsync/god knows what days are over
