Also don't get me going on the war on drugs addicts should be looked at as victims not criminals. That's most likely not the idea of the police but of attorneys, human right organizations and addiction centers...
Personally I'm disgusted by the victimizing of addicts simply because as I were confronted with temptations such as alcohol, cigarettes and drugs I said no - becoming a consumer is a choice...
If a child is told not to eat the cookie but still does it won't get victimized and most likely neither the tasty cookie nor the mother who baked and put it on the table gets blamed...
The limitation of a free choice is that taking the wrong path leads to negative consequences - I don't see how this shouldn't apply for addicts...
It's easy to point the finger and say addicts have a weak will.
But they may have lacked friends and family to help them make the right choices.
When I was a kid I once had the similar views to yours and I even once believed the war on drugs to have been a just cause.
But I'm much wiser now and have learned the truth.
The origin of some anti drug laws such as cannabis being illegal is a story of racism and corporate interests.
The US prison system does not cure addicts of their addiction in fact it can even introduce them to harder drugs like heroin or even turn them into violent criminals.
The US criminal justice system in general has become an embarrassment to the country.
For the cost of housing an addict in prison low end $22,000 a year high end $36,000 a year a lot you can pay for a lot of treatment programs.
My stance on drugs is legalese light stuff like pot and decriminalize small amounts of the others but keep the hard stuff illegal to posse and sell in large amounts.
Then spend money saved on anti drug education and deal with it like they have smoking.
