OMG 3D PIG DISGUSTING?!?!

  1. You decide.

So, was Dirge of Cerberus REALLY that bad?
I'll admit is was pathetically unfinished before it was released.
It's pretty sad when the Western version has multiple better fix ups than the Japanese version.

But overall, I had a pretty good time playing the game. So much so that I've finished it three times around.
Obviously it can't be that bad if I had three fun playthroughs.

Talk about Dirge of Cerberus ITT. Or Shelke, if you like.
I don't know about you, but I'm amused by %100 conclusive Canon proof that Vincent Valentine is a lolicon.

  2. I don't know...Wasn't Vincent's first (and I'll just go ahead and assume only) love a warm, mother archetype? Which would make me assume she had/has at least a decently large set of breasts.

Anyway! I found the game was actually pretty fun - especially given the fact that I had never expected Final Fantasy to branch off into a third person shooter; and to do it surprisingly well. Though, I think the most interesting part of the game, was it's 'challenge' mode, seeing how I actually found it difficult enough to keep me on my toes.

All in all, Vincent is an awesome Final Fantasy character (even if I find his background story to be a little too bare in the games themselves), and I'd like to see more games based around him. (Dirge of Ceberus 2, perhaps? Though in retrospect, that sounds silly.)

    Mmmm...

  5. Well i didnt see anything so bad about dirge. Only part i cant beat is that place where you fight enemies for a long time just to get a golden fucking moogle. fuck was i mad. The white hair guy i forgot his name at one point wasnt suppose to be killed but i got him down to empty life bar and he was still alive. =(

  6. Any game has the 'Final Fantasy' title on it, especially with the number '7' is bound to attract the die-hard, blind fanboys and girls across all nations. That being said, Dirge easily attracted a lot of attention of which it honestly did not deserve.

    Good:

The character designs retained the look of Advent Children really well and the environments did fit the dirty look of Midgar. The in-game cinematics helped the game's pacing and made sure you were on track.

    Bad

There was a main issue in Dirge that was the gameplay. It was repetitive and got boring way too fast. It doesn't have any creative spark besides "OH LOOK I AM VINCENT VALENTINE PAIRED UP WITH YUFFIE". Let me put it into this context: certain aspects of Assassin's Creed were repetitive and tiring at times, but the idea of running about across the Holy Land is great and well implemented by the Scimitar Engine on which it runs. Dirge pales in comparison except being a fanboy's and girl's wet dream without the 12904781290834 ton compensation-sword.

Dirge doesn't deserve active hate, but rather it should be forgotten as a game that gathers dust and was just a sidetrack to FFVII. Nothing more or less and to be honest, I don't know which is worse.

  7. I think, that as a person who have never been impressed by first person shooters, third person shooters are more for me. Because I ENJOYED the third person shooter mechanic in it.

I'm not Final Fantasy VII fanboy. Nor am I a Final Fantasy VI elitist either. IV is my favorite. But I enjoyed Dirge of Cerberus quite a lot.

And it makes me feel like people need to make more third person shooters, and with a weeaboo edge and feel, and less first person shooters, which I've never enjoyed.:/

Also, I've played some forgettable games. Dirge of Cerberus is MUCH less forgettable than Dawn of Mana or Samurai Legend Musashi. Heck, I'd put my enjoyment of Dirge of Cerberus of that of Radiata Stories.

    Exa

I kinda liked DoC, but it also felt a bit like a DMC rip-off painted in FFVII.

  9. ...Am I the only person alive, that thought Assassin's Creed would've been better off as just a CG movie? Since the game itself, was nothing more than story on top of plot, and any 'gameplay' was just 'lets see how long I can sneak around, before guards start trying to rape me'. Nothing against the game - it's a solid title, especially it's story - but the game just shouldn't be a game.

Back to the game on hand, however. Liking, or disliking, Dirge of Cerberus isn't just about being a Final Fantasy VII fanboy or fangirl. Sure, it makes up for a LOT of it, because hell, if you've never played VII, or watched Advent Children, then you're practically retarded for even picking the game up. But that's the point. It was MADE for fans of that world.

I'm no FFVII enthusiast - hell, not much of a Final Fantasy enthusiast at all. I played the game (DoC), and enjoyed it - it featured Vincent, so it was all the better. It's no different than what I do with most of my games. As very few games pop up as being 'amazing'.

It's a Final Fantasy shooter, for Final Fantasy fans.

Don't like it? Then forget it. But that's not going to change the fact that there's still a lot of people who enjoyed it. And quite thoroughly.

Now if you'll excuse me, a little DS excursion called 'Shin Megami Tensei: Devil's Survivor' beckons me for some mild entertainment.

    ALAS!

    ...I have no argument.

Up, up, mindless observation, and away!

EDIT: OH! I found something! Some of us prefer our fantasy, a little more than vanilla.

Wait... WAIT! Brilliant! This would be perfect for the next Penile Abuse article!

I haven't given the new FF7 games much attention.

There's this Squenix "Cool expensive-looking 3D asian CG people!" template that their FF7 'modernized' characters all got stuck with.

I (usually, not always) prefer the abstracted "lol huge head, block-fist" chibi character designs of the classic that leave the visual details up to your imagination. Yuffie in Kingdom Hearts would be an exception, where cartoony 3D is the superior choice. But the KH character designs were also pretty abstract, compared to Advent Children, or Dirge of Cerberus.

    *ahem*

It's a surrealism vs. realism thing.

  11. It's a Final Fantasy shooter, for Final Fantasy fans.

Exactly, you couldn't have phrased that better. I have played previous Final Fantasy titles and while I hold them in high-esteem, one still has judge a game by its content and its presentation whether if it was from a series that trails from a decade old legacy to something that new (original or not). I'll give Square-Enix credit for doing something different, but I felt they could have executed it better. Let's take Dissidia and Crisis Core for example .

The main point that I am trying to get across is that a game that rides on the wave of popularity stemming from a franchise and not by its own merits is a saddening thought in this day and age. It's like why a Bleach game might be popular: the gameplay may be mediocre, but since it appeals to a mass non-critical audience, it springboards to popularity. I may sound critical of Final Fantasy, but Halo is a very guilty party as well. Nintendo do it incessantly. Ubisoft has done it with the Prince of Persia series, Splinter Cell and now with Assassin's Creed. It is the sin that all companies do for the sake of money and assured 'success'. And let's not forget MGS4.

Even great games have huge underlying flaws. The dichotomy of morality in games is under recent light and while BioShock gets accolades and 'stamps of approval' from X magazine, it was so polarised that you had to be the second messiah that would deliver us to the motherland or a demon that ate babies for lunch or a certain torturing approving politician (hello there Dick Cheney).

I can understand why people and developers like to re-use ideas and insert them into new genres. It's safe since you know exactly what you are getting. What's more, if there' something really good about the game, it's like finding a diamond in the rough. I found this to be the case for Persona 3 as I was expecting typical J-RPG, but it plays like an anime and that quality in itself is quite remarkable.

As far as vanilla goes, I don't think there a game quite like Planescape Torment. A succubus with a chastity vest, a talking skull from a pillar of hell, a city of talking and humorous undead all of which I've never seen before. Problem is, it's very old and wordy but is still one of the greatest games of all time.

This, at least, is something I can agree with you entirely. :3

I can't imagine jRPGs possibly playing MORE like an anime.
So I'll keep this comment in mind when I finally get a hold of the game.

"You already thought that jRPGs were like an anime in game form? Well Persona 3 pushes the envelope for an even more anime experience!".
