   There were already a few rumours around that stated that Sony’s latest firmware update 3.56 contains a rootkit that gives sony certain remote access. The Hacker Mathieulh just confirmed that. The rootkit grants Sony access to your Playstation 3 when you log into the PSN. Afterwards they scan for homebrew apps and unpleseant content that Sony does not approve. Sony can therefore delete homebrew apps and disable jailbreaks without the owner’s knowledge.

   Essentially Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect. This can do whatever Sony wants it to do such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates and as the code executes remotely there is no reliable way to forge the replies.

   Whilst it is possible to patch or remove this code from the firmware this will likely mean the end of playing CFW online (as PSN can just check before login that this is active) or at the very least mean it will be even easier for Sony to detect and ban users.

   Judging from the fact that people can still connect using the proxy method it seems Sony hasn’t activated any of this yet but the functions are there in the new firmware.

    Pretty sure people care about World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Civilization, Total War, MMOs in general, and a bajillion other games. Lots of those 'established franchises' are on PC too, and PC has the better versions. But no need to start a flame war. You can keep your outdated hardware and 'games people care about'.

    That being said I'll always buy Nintendo's consoles for Zelda and Mario because I'm a sucker.

    In the US this is extremely illegal and even could carry criminal charges.

    I was hoping they would be stupid enough to brick consoles as it would be funny as hell to see Sony get sued into chapter 11 and the CEO step down in shame.
    Still could cause lawsuits as the detection methods can create false positives and there is the precedent of Apple loosing the legal battle over jail breaking the iphone.
    I still remember the CD rootkit and Suckurom so I have no sympathy for them as they still have not learned the concepts of consumer rights and fair use yet.
    I now almost always use the pirated version or buy the game on steam if there is DRM like securom.
    Actually once the console is cracked it might be possible to even eliminate the need for PSN in network play.

    Relly? by what i know Mobile Suit Gundam Ekusutorimubasasu, Tekken 6 bloodline rebelion, The King of Fighters XIII, the last version of SSFIV (the one with yun, yang, evil ryu and oni gouki), blazblue cs 2 and even MBAACC are all exclusive for arcade ports that have as OS the Windows Xp (yeah, both taito type x series and the sega ring series use this).
    Not to mention starcraft 2...
