Your opinion about the new comment system.

  1. Hello, this is my first time here, so I have to get used to everything here ASAP. So what do you think about the new comment system on the SanCom news board?

Our comments there are pre-arranged by scores. What's up with that? I don't know where the replies are going. I really hate the new system. The score-sorting feature is broken. I like the old one way better.

If the mods have problems with this topic being misplaced or already made, please do so.

I complained about that some time ago. Theres an option above the comments where you can sort the comments by date, just like before, instead of an arrangement of ratings/score.

EDIT: Oh, just read ur comment in the article. Yeah its by default, but once you click the option it stays that way doesn't it? And yeah we all hate it.

  4. imo if they can make a permanent default Sort by 'Date', it's nice.
since people want to know the flow of comment. put sort by 'Score' sometime make it messed up.

    or
make an option for user to select which one they desire to set default for 'sort by', mean that default only apply to that user only each time they open it.

  5. I don't like it

    ^no, it doesn't
    .
    I want it like this:
    - sorted by DATE by default
    - but you should have the option that your comments are on the top so you can answer or see reactions on your comments

    hmm... well..

..you could just go to "My Account" up there above, scroll to your comment and click "view".

  7. Sorting by score has some merit, but I find it annoying that it causes replies to go in the wrong order.

Changes are always going to get some negative feedback, but everyone will be cool with it in a week. Sorting the comments by score is a pretty good way to deal with "first" posts at any rate. And to be honest, having the highest rated comments on top is a nice way to be able to read a few cool comments rather than having to look through a load of uneducated nonsense before you come across someone who wrote a good comment.

Anyway, you can still sort them by date by adding ?sort=descending to the end of the URL.

Or ?sort=ascending for offbeat people like you.

  11. I'm glad people are finally discussing this instead of just spamming snide remarks in the comments themselves.

The system is still in flux and there are some bugs - it should actually be remembering your preference but that is obviously having problems. The bugs should be fixed soon, and some further refinements made.

The default (for anyone who does not set it otherwise) will be staying as score. It has some very strong advantages, such as pushing the excellent comments to the very top where people can easily find them and thus encouraging people to read the comments, dumping threads consisting of two anons insulting each others' mommas down to the very bottom, creating a more dynamic comments area where discussions not started 10 minutes after the post was made can actually garner some attention, and also totally eliminating the first post/"I'm just posting into the topmost thread to get my comment noticed" issue.

I have been considering the merits of an email monitoring/notification system for comment threads as well, so people can more easily follow the discussions.

Karma will also be incoming, for comments to start with at least.

Corrected. Rating systems are a good try, maybe one of the best available without excessive workload, but...

EDIT: Also, quality is in the eye of the beholder.

  13. agree with Odysseus
excellent and popular comments are two totally different things
sometimes when I write a totally random comment it gets +1.0 and I don't even know why

  14. The Sankaku Complex philosophy has always been that "most popular" = "excellent" I'm afraid. The rating system is a perfect fit for the selection of the articles in that regard.

  15. Ha ha, that's right. I should remember where I am. Thanks, Arte, for reminding me. How are page views doing?

  16. ^ lol

as long it will remember the DATE sorting...

  17. Yes, allowing it to remember ascending or descending date setting properly is a priority.

  19. Switching between Score and Date does nothing for me...

    [EDIT]

    Nvm, I see the difference!

  20. For me, in all honesty, I don't worry about it..

Besides it was just placed... so it was expected that it will have some *bugs* in the beginning...

Its understandable that once something new is added, its expected to be working properly when people - WANT IT and HOW THEY WANT IT!

However it ~ takes time ~ for anything to be completely instantaneous, just give it time for it to come its full potential, and if any problems occur, report it, so it can be attended to and improved on.
