  1. I knew that news post would come up when I heard this story on NPR yesterday, and I just wanted to say that I advise people read the interview with Lang Lang before making their own conclusions.

You can read the transcript here: http://www.npr.org/2011/01/24/133187969/Pianist-Lang-Lang-On-His-Controversial-Music-Pick

In all honesty I believe this was totally harmless.

For those who tl;dr, important quotes:

Mr. LANG LANG: I feel very sad. You know, I very sad. And, you know, and I must say, disappointing. Because, you know, as a person, what I'm trying to do, and what my missions are, you know, making music. And, you know, I'm very honored that people inviting me to play in those great events and to connect us to classical music and to music, to Chinese music and to American music, to, you know, to world music. And once, you know, people use it as a political issue, that makes me really sad because I am a musician. I'm not a politician.

BLOCK: The song that you played, in the movie, in the "Battle on Shangganling Mountain," which came out in 1956, it is a very nationalistic song and it...

Mr. LANG LANG: You know, I never know about that movie. I just learned it afterward. It's like, 1956. This is when my mother was two years old. I mean, this is 55 years ago. And when I grew up, I only hear this as a beautiful melody. That's it. And this piece is very popular as a traditional Chinese song.

Pretty much. This country has freedom of speech (so to speak) and I believe that it's being used to show one person's disapproval towards one country. The best thing to do is hold our heads high and acknowledge their ill will and stand on higher ground instead of yelling at them.

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant. If you read the interview, it's fairly apparent that the musician had no intention of using this song in such a way.

A lot of the feeling is lost between text and hearing the man actually speak, and he seemed quite sincere over the radio.

Even so, people will take it as such and the best thing to do about it is acknowledge it. At this point it's out of the hands of the musician but in the hands of the media world round.

being totally harmless, you totally wasted a thread for no other reason other than to make a pointless point about harmnlessness.

In the very least this should of been posted in the "Humanities Thread"

I don't believe in wasted thread. Even if everyone agrees on something the thread at least opened up an opportunity.

Now, before I go to bed, I'd like to point out that I think this guy was deliberately trolling the President, all of the Americans present, and America as a whole. I think that it was planned out by Lang Lang and the Chinese government officials beforehand.

  13. My only problem with this guy is how much he's saying "you know" in every other sentence there.

When someone is talking to you and goes "you know", tell them "No, I don't know."

If sparky were here, I'd bet he's nuke lang lang with a short vacation for posting a blatant troll thread.

At least lang lang isn't as persistent as the shameless-asian-guy
