One is not better than the other. People favor over the other because they never happened to pick up the medium and actually read it. If someone had to choose, it would be subjective there's no real debate because the answer is a moot point.
Personally, I do enjoy both American comic and Japanese manga. Both are exceptionally detailed in their own way.
I will say however, I can't get myself to like these modern American cartoons, I much prefer the old classic from the 80s and early 90s. But, that's just a personal preference.

I've given American comics a chance because I thought they were pretty but with manga I just have more styles to chose from and less dialogue to read. With American comics they keep 'rebooting' the same idea so I never know when a series will end. When I buy manga I usually wait till all the volumes are out so I don't have to wait or by it then the series get's discontinues in the middle (i.e Zombie Powder) I can't do that with American comics. I'm not one to say manga is better than comics or vice-versa because I usually float to what is more visually stunning.

You people should be ashamed. Of course Manga looks fucking boring compared to Marvel or D.C. Comics. As a big fan of both, I can't really take him seriously but he is right in some points. I'll still be loving both.
so what are the genre of american comics? oh that's right super hero and that's probably 80% of them are.
while manga has a diverse selection, ranging from shoujo, violence, yuri, yaoi, superhero, moe, harem, h-manga, doujinshi, action, adventure, drama, music, highschool, kids you name it.
how many people read manga? tons of them. because it appeals to any age(especially in asian countries) while american comics? very very few(only few people read outside of western countries but we know east is larger than west)
i don't even think i ever saw a western artist went to other genres besides superhero. do they went to the yaoi route?(i might not be a fan of it but it's always good to have choices)
that's the problem with western comics, they are only limited to some people, while manga can reach even the oldest person of the world.
i sometimes read western comics albeit western version of japanese works(Metal Gear Solid Comic comes to mind) they're really good but they can't outweigh the many genres of the anime/manga industry. when's the last time they aired a western cartoon that is closer to it's comic counterpart? example Spawn where he decapitates people? probably never.
it's all preference but i think the manga industry is much more larger and more diverse than western comics but people can enjoy both so why not?.
oh if i may ask where do you DDL this stuff? or do you suscribed to sites like Marvel? you seem to know western comics. mind if you recommend me a series?

Are there any series where there was an American illustrator but a Japanese writer? That's another thing with comics, they are mostly done by more than one person while manga is a majority of a solo act. (Well the many assistants don't get any head credit.) I know Stan Lee is doing something with the Shaman King artist but it's still manga style with American story.
