  1. Even if the shit passes it will be repealed soon afterwords when the economic chickens come home to roost.
It likely will be the end of Ishihara's career though really he should have retired years ago.

  2. I believe that major comic book artists, such as Rumiko Takahashi (creator of Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, etc.) have pointed out the ambiguity of such bills and the limitations such things put on freedom of expression.
The statements have been so vague in the past that it could be applied to paintings of a spring day.
Japanese comics have always dealt with difficult and mature issues and it is a kind of social commentary and art expression.
That every major publishing company is boycotting the issue should be a sign that the bill is not in the best interests of the economy nor freedom of expression.

Maybe they should start looking at the porno magazines with underage girls in them first? Just a thought.

  3. Japan does of a law for freedom of speech and press in it's Constitution.
Though the Kisha club should be done away with.

This ban could be challenged as it runs aground of the national law.

  4. I honestly don't know what's gonna happen with this ban proposal personally

    my advice:

  5. Well... I suppose if it does succeed then all anime and manga companies can just label all their normal ecchi stuff adults only and it can still be put out. The only downfall to that is that all you wee ones (under 18) won't get to watch... well any anime shows really)

  6. bill is a waste of time and it's killing trees lol

In my opinion, this bill is just going to encourage filesharing/piracy for that very reason.

  8. i'm thinking that it will fail as it could potential cause many to be jobless. even if it does pass by some miracle, it will be undone by hordes of ppl angry about loosing their jobs.

    that's my take on it.

I don't think it'll happen, anime/manga/hentai is a good part of their economy. If they purposely cripple themselves i'm going to laugh.

It won't happen though, its just a vague threat to make it seem like they are doing something. Nothing out of the ordinary.

you are right i don't think they will ban hentai

  10. The anime/manga sales would go down if the they can't sell to minors anymore, which in turn encourages producers to drop not so "family friendly material" (as demonstrated in this article) and keep focusing on "morally right" works. Plus, as Nefly said

this bill is just going to encourage filesharing/piracy

This regulation/ban/whatever won't just hit minors who wouldn't be able to purchase ecchi/hentai, but the industry itself. Anime would kinda lose it's point if it regressed to same stage most American cartoons are...

  12. Hmm the law passed. And looking at the forum here, there has been quite a lot of hysterical postings, which I likely won't get around to reading, as the content will be almost certainly predictable.

Oh well A. I don't live in Japan, or Tokyo and B. I'm an adult, so I am not at risk :)

But I see a MAJOR die off of a lot of content in a rather sudden fashion.

Looks like Sankaku is going to get real dull with nothing new to talk about soon.

  15. Does anyone know if this is going to alter the ero anime/manga/game industry in any way?

  17. From what I've gathered it won't just affect kids buying ero manga. If producing a series targeted towards a large demographic becomes not profitable (or in this case developers are forbidden from marketing it to minors) you could see many shows cancelled, particularly popular ones, which have viewers both young and old.

  18. darkmind35: "are forbidden from marketing it to minors"
j-just think about this sentence for a second...
no one is forbidden to market shows to minors
and those late night shows aren't marketed to minors either

shows that are meant to sell on disks are not targeted to minors - because they don't even have the money to buy them

watch Ika Musume it's airing at 2am, meant to sell on disks and no minor will ever buy it
