Exactly. And I choose to boycott their private property in the same way that I boycott anything from Orson Scott Card.

why? orson scott card is a great writer!

it would be intriguing to know how much money the author made so far from the ebook sales

I was just about to respond to that, hehe. I don't think Australia ever has (at least not on record). We just lynched the locals. :P

True that. No-one wants it, it's been pushed back, but they're still spending money on it. :(

They've also banned alcohol and porn in the Aboriginal Communities (not just out bush, there is one less than a KM from me). Yet they're spending millions on fitting them out with high-speed net connections.. Hmmmm...

LOL alaska natives are basically born to be alchoholics(no cultural use so no resistance) and we don't ban them from having it. Though they have voted some communities dry. We also keep alchohol separate from the normal section of stores but still got nothing on that.

The thing is, you can take the alcohol away from them but they'll just find something else.
Petrol and methylated spirits being the big ones. A service station (Gas station) got done in a while ago for putting the metho in the fridge! The locals just run it through bread to get the dye out in the belief that the dye is what's toxic...

Still, I'm all for easing off on the restrictions. The problem ones will kill themselves off real quick. Nothing like seeing people drinking -as- they walk into a Renal Dialysis clinic..

I also find that somewhat baffling. I know people may take exception to the Mormon and Christian overtones in some of his writings, but that's hardly a reason to boycott all of it.

Politically, he's one of the few devout religious persons who lambasts the republican party for all their christian lip service but openly oppose the kind of social programs that Jesus would have been obviously for.

Socially he's one of the progessives who openly embraces filesharing and digital distribution. At one point he had his entire works posted on his official site until his publishers forced him to take it down.

I read his Ender's game series when I was about 10-13 so I didn't read too much into the underlying tensions. I pretty much just read the plot as it was presented

reminds me a lot of starcraft and the zergs/macross frontier and the Vajra now that I think of it o_O

Naw, Ender's Game + Sequels are purely secular. Ender's Shadow series is socio-religious speculation, but could still be construed as secular because it's not particularly dogmatic.

I'm referring to his women of the old testament series, the Tales of Alvin Maker (based on mormon history), and Homecoming Series (based on book of Mormon).

  15. There are books out there that claim the holocaust never happened...

I find that to be an offense worse than whatever might be in that book.

  16. I think Freedom of Speech goes out the window when the book is actually a guide on how to affectively molest children. I doubt they would sell a guide for rapists. Things that encourage violence are not always protected under free speech, I think.

Holocaust revisionists don't say the holocaust never happened, many revisionists are Jews or former Jews you know. They mainly argue that they weren't gassed by Zyklon B because of the lack of staining on the walls of the chambers, but they don't deny that they were shot, starved and in many cases died of typhus. Zyklon B at the time was used as a delousing agent because thats what it was primarily used for, there is lots of evidence of that and modern historians don't deny this.

Well to me speech must be protected at all times regardless of how dark or unpleasant. Afterall once you let one bit of free speech go who knows how long it will be till it gets to what you consider too far.

We barely have freedom of speech anymore as it is, people can just say that offends me, this hurts my cultural sensitivities or thats hatespeech etc and people have to shut up. This is why it kind of surprises me that they haven't done the same with this book, its a breach of freedom of speech I wouldn't mind as much.

I don't think we have had true free speech in a long time, but it makes sense to try and defend what little there is of it left.

Speaking of book burnings we may not burn them anymore, but the government still bans books, censors books and pressures book shops not to sell certain books. Its a subversive form of book burning really.

Also being arrested for "Holocaust Denial" is a breech of freedom of speech and as far as I'm concerned truth doesn't fear investigation!

And things like that are why i hate the modern world and why most americans are like little kids from cradle to grave. They hardly ever have to grow a pair. They got no moxy anymore.

But anyways yes that is my point "our rights are going away faster than an unwanted pregnancy down the drain on prom night" To paraphrase the great Dr. Venture.

But that is also why we should defend what rights we have left to the death.
