I really don't have words to describe how sick this makes me except it makes me understand why some people resort to violence.
The RIAA expects a single mom to pay 1.5M for 24 songs which would only be worth at most $24 off Amazon mp3.
I could not imagine any honest person or even someone with any the slightest semblance of decency ruling in favor of the RIAA so I strongly suspect a hung jury and payoffs.

The RIAA and it's lawyers just cannot stand the thought of getting squat for their efforts.
The very most I can suggest she should pay would be $1 a song and a single $500 fine.
Even the Judge agreed what the RIAA wants is monstrous and disgusting.I do strongly suspect highly illegal payoffs by the RIAA as no one I know would agree 1.5M is fair even if she stole CDs from a music store and copied them.
If I was on the jury I'd rule innocent simply because I despise the RIAA and think the laws on copyright in the US are generally wrong as they were not written by the people but by corporate fat cats.

I love how they state they would donate the money to the "struggling artists" charity. What a crock of shit.
I hope that lady doesn't pay them a single cent. Now i'm off to download some music myself as a way to say fuck you.

I have to agree with you on that char, the people of the RIAA are as greedy as it gets. Losing $25 doesn't mean you should try to extort 1.5 million from someone. She should be allowed to counter-sue for extortion, even if she did break the law..that kind of compensation is absured.

Same here I hope the RIAA lawyers end up not getting a single cent for their efforts in the end.
BTW this has little to do with money as even an idiot would know she can't pay such a fine it's about making an example of her.
Even the settlement they offered probably involved her being forced to do some PR shit and pretty much sucking the RIAA's diseased cock on TV.

Yeah, its quite sad that financial extortion is still being used as an example-maker. Have we really grown as a species? We used to mainly use heads on pikes for that. "Why kill them and end the pain when we can make them suffer forever" kinda thing.
I sometimes wonder if we are going backwards or forwards anymore, everything now is 1 step forward and 10 steps back.

3 years ago, the same woman was ordered to pay a mere $222,000. She couldn't pay and appealed it, which then resulted in the amount increasing to $1,920,000.
Edit: Right... read article first, post after...

Only in America..
I noticed some oddities though,
"The RIAA rejected the reduced penalty for legal reasons."
- Another one of these fine laws like the one with patents where they're no longer hold any value if you don't defend them actively no matter how ridiculous it may be in some situations?"RIAA spokeswoman Cara Duckworth said the association made several attempts to settle with Thomas-Rasset, at first for $5,000"
"Any amount that I pay to them is money that I could use to feed my children. Any amount that I pay to them is money I could use to clothe my kids, and pay my mortgage so my kids have a place to sleep."
- Then she ends up going to court over the same shit in 3 separate cases?
Don't know what a lawyer costs in the states, but I'd say that $5,000 is pretty much already what you blow in the first case.. let alone start 2 others, so apparently she does have some cash and was lying.Music Industry makes the manga/anime industry look like it's run by Angels, though both could do with a thorough cleaning getting rid of all the people in the middle layer that are exploiting both artists and consumers.

Yes both industries could use a good cleaning with fire.
As for the 5K agreement I suspect it required her to publicly admit she did wrong or even was baloney.
Remember these people will even sell their own mother out if they could make a buck doing it.
If they did get any money it won't go to artist every last cent would go to fat cat pockets.Posted 5 years ago # -

I only buy albums that are non-RIAA. If they're RIAA, I pirate them.

We just sue less.
About this woman: if she's already been sued twice as a single mother, WHY DID SHE KEEP DOWNLOADING AND SHARING SONGS?
There's stupid, and then there's bullshit stupid.
