  1. So some islands in dispute since WW2 got a visit from President Medvedev. Japan recalled their ambassador temporarily in protest. He visited a school and fishery and a power station and promised more infrastructure investment in the region.

This brings up the question who do the residents pay taxes to and what language do they speak? Who do they want to be a part of? Where previous Japanese residents kicked out?

Odd dispute.. who's collecting taxes from the current inhabitants of the island, that would be the rightful owner wouldn't it?

So aren't these people paying taxes since both Russia and Japan are arguing about who the islands belong to? If russia is planning to invest in the islands it seems rather odd that Japan would claim it as its own.

  5. From what I can find, it seems that the islands might as well be Russian now. Most of the people living there are ethnically 'Russian' (as in ethnically from areas in and around Russia), and Russia has already invested in the infrastructure there before.

I'm with Japan on the Senkaku islands dispute, but these islands are basically Russian already.

  6. I do like Japanese but Russians all the way...
But I think this is because these islands are important strategicly for transporting of oil...
