信長の野望・革新/Nobunaga no Yabou – Kakushin (Nobunaga’s Ambition – Kakushin/Reform) is the latest in the series of Sengoku Jidai grand strategy games which made Koei, and since it was relatively recently updated with the パワーアップキット/Power-up Kit, I will provide a review. Please note that this is the sequel to the recently released (in English) Nobunaga’s Ambition: Rise to Power, an otherwise quite different game. The Power-up Kit (PK) provides some fairly significant changes, so I will restrict this review to the game with the PK.

Having finally finished 戦場のヴァルキュリア/Valkyria Chronicles, I am in a position to review and recommend it; my earlier impressions also still stand, view them here and here for additional detail and more screenshots. Valkyria Chronicles is really one of the first truly next generation games for the PS3, and probably heralds the maturation of the platform. It is easy to recommend, in fact difficult not to recommend, on every level; for anyone who is a fan of wargames, RPGs or anime, it is a game which is absolutely indispensible. Enough with the general impressions – what of the game proper? What of Alicia’s swimsuit? Read on for both.

Ever heard of キリヤマ太一/Taichi Kiriyama? I hadn’t either, even being a fan of the three eroge to which he has lent his superb art direction. He deserves an introduction, and the reader also deserves an introduction to his (rather explicit) art.

Only in Korea. It seems two fans took the burning question of which character is best, Haruhi or Eva’s Asuka, so seriously they were forced to move it from an online venue to an offline one, and naturally the ensuing fracas was recorded for your viewing pleasure. Their online argument lasted 5 hours, no word on how quickly the brawl finished. Nobody seems to know who won either. Via Itai News, original Korean article here. View the tawdry spectacle here and here. The article explains it is an outbreak of “現P” (abbreviation of “現実PK” – “Real PK” – MMORPG buffs will know all about Player Killing), something which seems to be a phenomenon limited to Korea and China.

PC RPG eroge Tears to Tiara/ティアーズ・トゥ・ティアラ, by Leaf, has just had a July 17th release confirmed for the PS3, and preorders have opened, reported here. The original being published in 2005, some improvements can expected for the PS3 port by the looks of things (the screens look good), but as with other console ports of eroge, the biggest “improvement” is likely to be stripping out the naughty bits. Unfortunate.

If ever a game sold more copies on account of cover art than of any other factor, フェイト/タイガーころしあむ/Fate Tiger Colosseum for the PSP here is a contender. Great cover, even if it is lions rather than tigers. The reviews are not bad, but spending time with the core works is perhaps more advisable. Figure version here.

I was enthused before, and more play reveals 戦場のヴァルキュリア/Valkyria Chronicles to possess astonishing quality in terms of gameplay, as well as graphics and production values. This is Hans, by the way.

Finally the long awaited RPG 戦場のヴァルキュリア/Valkyria Chronicles has hit the store shelves, at least in Japan. I’m usually not one to get taken by prerelease excitement, but my anticipation was such that I had to get up early (or rather, stay up late) and brave the uncertain Tokyo weather in a jaunt to Bic to pick up a copy. I’ve taken some time out from playing it to provide my first impressions and plenty of detail on the game.

A brief tour of robotics hobby shop “Robot Kingdom” (ツクモロボット王国), run by very reasonable Akiba PC chain Tsukumo, on the 3rd floor of their “パソコン本店” flagship PC department store.

This is 戦場のヴァルキュリア, or Valkyria Chronicles. I am eagerly awaiting this strategic RPG for the PS3, out in mere days (the 24th). Details on the actual gameplay seem to have taken a backseat to shots of the stunning cutscenes and beautiful character designs. The tanks are also quite nice… Here are some shots of the trailer I took; I will doubtless post a more detailed look after the release.

For those that are not familiar with RECETTEAR〜アイテム屋さんのはじめ方〜 (Recettear: How to start an Item Shop), it is a fantasy business RPG, produced and published by dojin-soft outfit EasyGameStation.
It is really rather good – read on for an appraisal and plenty of screenshots.
