A man, Takanori Hoshijima (33), who admits to murdering his lady neighbour with the intention of raping her, and who then apparently carved the body up into small pieces and disposed of them by flushing them down the toilet, even as police searched the neighbouring apartment, now has even more infamy to contend with – the mass media for some reason highlights his tenure working for a large game company.

An address was given by Megami Tensei/Persona series creator 岡田耕始/Koji “Cozy” Okada at the University of Tokyo recently, as part of the May Festival, in which he was kind enough to expound in some detail about his thoughts about the excellent Megami Tensei series as creator.
Famitsu has published a very interesting and quite detailed article covering this, and I have prepared a full translation below; this should be of particular interest to Megami Tensei and Persona fans, as well as those interested in the creative processes leading to a prolific franchise which is not only extremely successful, but also highly adventurous and original.

Wasn’t this supposed to be the last in the series? Snake’s last battle? Well, it seems that only applies to Snake, but the Metal Gear series will go on, Hideo Kojma reveals in the recent interview (scan below), also saying “I’ve got to get to thinking about Metal Gear Solid 5”. Clearly Kojima is not one to abandon a successful franchise, although this hardly seems surprising. Via Ore-teki.

“Your antics are a nuisance, so cut it out please”. Otaku and their shenanigans have triggered a very forthright response from 榊原ゆい/Yui Sakakibara (prolific seiyuu for many famous eroge), or Yui-nyan, clearly not one to put up with any nonsense, or take it lying down as some of her compatriots do.

Obsessive followers of Disgaea, such as myself, will be interested to note that for the first time Pleinair will be a playable character in a Disgaea game: in 魔界戦記ディスガイア 魔界の王子と赤い月 / Disgaea: Prince of the Demon World and the Red Moon, the refined DS edition of the PSP release set for release June 26th, Pleinair will be added, and Adell and Rosalind will also feature. Dengeki has plenty of tiny little screens.
There also appear to be numerous interesting additions to gameplay, and of course Etna mode will be intact, along with new dialogue for Etna. I am none too happy that these games don’t seem to be finding their way back onto the non-portables…

Famitsu reveals a none too inspiring video preview of what may mark the first of many game appearances for Hatsune Miku. The game is 13歳のハローワークDS / 13-Sai no Hello Work (details here), for the Nintendo DS, and it features a Vocaloid singing minigame.
Given the enormous success of Miku, I’m inclined to think we can expect some much more impressive use of the franchise in a gaming medium at a later date, perhaps on the Wii or PS3?

A truly huge array of controllers has been released for Nintendo’s Famicon system, many of which have never been seen outside Japan, perhaps something to be thankful for. You are doubtless wondering what on earth the above controller is for; it is a specialised pachinko controller for such famous games as “Pachinko Daisakusen Series”, on the NES. Below is the terrifying JoyBall, as well as the frankly awe-inspiring Meijin-kun, amongst others.

Grand master CG artist キリヤマ太一/Taichi Kiriyama’s magnum opus “Sexfriend” is set to get a sequel, under his art direction; Moonphase informs us that the game will have a new story and characters unconnected with the first, with released projected for some time in 2009. The game will apparently feature some “simulation game” gameplay (think dating game as opposed to pure visual novel). Check my previous article if you have no idea why this is great news.
We also have the news that another game of his is due for release at the end of October, focused on the debauched antics of a teacher: 皇涼子のBitchな1日.

Famitsu has published plenty of screens for the upcoming Haruhi Wii dance game, but the article is almost completely devoid of new information regarding the game, save a few details on how the dance system works (it’s a standard timing based system); the screens basically give all the information you need, however. It does now seem certain that only Haruhi, Nagato and Mikuru will feature in any prominence.

The excellent 2D fighting series Samurai Spirits/Samurai Shodown looks set to get a new release on the Wii and PS2, as サムライスピリッツ天下一剣客伝 / Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkaku Den, although they seem to have unfortunately stopped short of making it into a sequel. It appears the previous games will also be included.
The only upgrades promised seem to be rerecorded voices and a colour editor, along online bouts for the PS2 and a minigame for the Wii – seems they got things the wrong way round there. Release is set for July 24th. I can’t help but think they would do well to put some more effort into this franchise. Story and screens here.

The Mainichi “2.5% of children erogamers” story turns out to be fake scaremongering after all, and my scepticism seems correct; the lying hacks completely twisted the figures, in fact “adult games” was referring to the likes of GTA, and there was a separate category for “H games”, which they completely ignored, and the results? 0.7% admitted to playing them, though 12.4% (the highest non-response) declined to respond? Interesting.
This does however still leave 0.7% bold enough to admit it, and a lot of the sample unwilling to respond, so the true figure is anyone’s guess. I can’t help suspecting that the proportion actually sexually active is probably higher than these figures for eroge, so it does bring the whole thing into focus as mere media scaremongering anyway. The table in question is below, source here.
