Animation Kobe, an event run by the city of Kobe for the promotion of work in the various fields of animation, has announced the winners of its 15th Kobe Animation Awards for 2010 (the 2009 award are visible here.)
Some of the more notable winners include Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu for Best Movie, K-ON!! as Best TV Anime, Hatsune Miku’s 39’s Giving Day Concert for the mysterious “Network” Award, and To Aru Kagaku’s “only my railgun” for Best Theme Song.

To Aru Majutsu no Index II marks the return of the original series, delighting fans with another chance to become reacquainted with moe staples Index, Mikoto by way of JC Staff’s competent animation skills – a return which is proving well received indeed.

A rather unique poster of the Keion-bu sidelining as spokesmodels for the Japanese National Census has recently sold on Yahoo Auctions for ¥71,000 (approx. $860 USD); while definitely not a record for impassioned otaku auctions, still surely a princely sum for a B2-sized poster with governmental text obscuring much of the artwork.

Yui, K-ON!’s moesome lead guitarist, has already received a number of unofficial ona-hole incarnations, but the HIP Onabeat is by far the most sophisticated example, sporting two holes, special “blood lotion” which pours forth as Yui’s simulated maidenhood is taken, special brown lotion for anal maniacs, and a miniature dildo (the intended usage of which is fortunately unclear).

K-ON!! viewers soon discovered that Kyoto Animation has gone to the trouble of giving unique character designs to all 35 of the keion-bu’s class, and many of these typically undifferentiated “mob characters” have in fact already developed minor followings of their own.
The quest to identify all of the characters began to get serious when the second episode revealed the stylish belle who occupies the seat next to Yui. Soon more characters were identified, and enthusiastic fan art began appearing. The unfolding tale of the other 31 girls is detailed below.

The Lucky Star mikoshi, one of Washinomiya’s most sacred relics to legions of otaku devotees, will be be spending most of the year in China for the Expo 2010 Shanghai China international fair as an example of Japan’s unique modern visual art.
The mikoshi, a Shinto portable shrine used as a sort of chariot for deities during religious processions, is perhaps less well known outside of Japan than it deserves, so a brief introduction to the shrine is included below…
