SNK President Addresses Saudi Arabian Ownership Concerns

SNK caused concern earlier this year when it was revealed that they are now nearly entirely owned by the Electronic Gaming Development Company, which is in turn owned by the MiSK Foundation – or in other words, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad bin Salman, as some believed some horrid changes might be coming.

In an interview with Famitsu, SNK president Kenji Matsubara addressed concerns that Saudi Arabian influence will be at play with SNK’s games going forward.

Here is Matsubara’s reply when pressed regarding what extent SNK is able to operate on its own terms, especially as the purchase was motivated to bolster Saudi Arabia’s output in video gaming:

On that aspect, we are completely separate. The crown prince, as a shareholder, as the owner of the company, holds the view that business-wise, “SNK should stay as it is”. And as a company, we understood this, planned the course forward with the board of directors, and executed it. This is something that is the same as anywhere, Saudi Arabia or not.

That said, [the prince] is a fan after all, and talks passionately about what aspects make ‘KOF’ so attractive. In that sense, he’s just one of the more extremely passionate fans.

SNK’s latest game is The King of Fighters XV, and more recently, the first new Fatal Fury game in 20 years was announced.
