Genndy Tartakovsky Implies Live-Action Powerpuff Girls Might Need New Staff

During a recent interview with CBR, Genndy Tartakovsky (the director of the original animated Powerpuff Girls) was asked about the in-development live-action series, leading to him implying the staff may not be fit for the job.

Genndy Tartakovsky:

Genndy Tartakovsky was asked questions about the live-action CW series before about a year ago, and back then he seemed to have a slightly more positive perspective:

“I didn’t create it, but obviously I worked on it a lot. When you try to do a certain thing and then you’re successful at it, and then somebody else takes it, and now is gonna make it a different thing, is that good? Is it bad? I mean, they made an anime from Powerpuff Girls. And then it was like straight anime, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, it lost a lot of some of the charm that I thought we had in the American version.’ But it was good in a different way too. So, that’s the thing. It’s always, ‘Who’s gonna do it? Is it gonna be sincere? Is there a purpose for it besides just, ‘Oh, people know Powerpuff Girls, so let’s do it.'”

More recently, he seems to have cooled on the idea:

Interviewer: A number of animated series are being adapted to live-action, including The Powerpuff Girls — how do you think this story will translate to live-action?

Genndy: “These days, the lines are… I don’t know if there are any more lines left to cross. Some stuff that’s animated becomes live-action and vice versa like you’re saying. We did Star Wars as an animated show and I feel like that’s the threshold of great properties becoming animation. So for me, I’m not as interested in that anymore. I feel like creating an original show and bringing it to life is extremely satisfying. As far as The Powerpuff Girls go, you know, I don’t know — I think anything can work if it’s got good people attached to it, and they kind of figure it out. The idea is strong, sure, and it worked as an animated show. So we shall see.”

Genndy’s perspective had shifted from “this is interesting, let’s see how it goes” to “I don’t know, I think you need the right people to make it work”. Fans have been united in the opinion that the people attached to the project aren’t right for it, and even a lead actress made a hasty exit to disconnect herself from it before things got any worse.
