Australian House Committee Considering Porn Age Verification

Taking inspiration from the United Kingdom’s deeds with porn verification, Australia might be following suit as their House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs are considering age verification for not only porn but online gambling in addition.

The topic was brought to discussion by Senator Anne Ruston (Minister for Families and Social Services) and Paul Fletcher (Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety, and the Arts), with one of the purposes of the age verification apparently being to keep children online “safe”.

The terms of reference regarding this move state that the committee will “look into the potential benefits of further online age verification requirements, including to protect children from potential harm, and business and non-government organizations from reputation, operational and legal risks”.

Supposedly, the House will be investigating the potential downsides to the age verification as well, such as economic impact, privacy breeches, impact on freedom of expression, false assurance and whether or not this would be encroaching into “unregulated/illegal environments or to other legal forms of these activities”.

The UK’s previously announced porn age verification checks (which were indicated in the the terms of reference) were to be implemented on July 15th but this did not come to pass – supposedly due to its inability to comply with EU standards.

Australia’s committee will provide an update on the subject come October 25th.
